M2 Corporation Mossberg Tactical Shotgun

Notes: This is a Mossberg M-590 redone by the M2 Corporation to make it better for tactical situations.  The modifications include: a flat non-reflective finish; ghost ring rear sight and H&K-style front sight; muzzle and barrel reinforcement so that the shotgun can double as a battering ram (the tubular magazine is likewise reinforced, extended, and even with the muzzle); replacement of the pistol grip with one that is more ergonomic; a lighter trigger, and a “Sidesaddle” ammunition carrier holding 6 rounds.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This weapon does not exist.

M-1917 Trench Gun

Notes:  This World War 1 weapon was designed for close-in trench fighting – hence the name.  It is basically a Winchester 97 pump-action shotgun with a bayonet lug attached and a perforated heat shield above the barrel to facilitate bayonet fighting.  They are not seen much today, but other weapons of this type have been made in other parts of the world.  The most common place the Trench Gun is seen today is in the hands of World War 1 and 2 re-enactors.

Markel Custom Mossberg 500

Notes: As far as I know, this weapon is a “one-off” – a custom conversion done for firearms expert Paul Markel by Fit 4 Duty.  It is an interesting gun, however, so I have included it here.  Markel’s conversion centers around the use of Aguila’s Mini-Shells, 1.75”-long 12 Gauge shotgun shells.  The shotgun has Tritium Big Dot/Ghost Ring XS sights, which are high-visibility and useful for throwing shot or slugs.  The shotgun is finished in Fit 4 Duty’s OD Green anticorrosive coating.  The standard stock is replaced with an Advanced Technology synthetic stock with a full pistol grip.  A Wilderness Tactical Products Single Point Sling keeps the gun in the ready position in the center of the body, yet allows the weapon to be instantly brought to bear.  The resulting weapon is much more functional, and able to use almost any non-magnum round out there.

Master Key Shotgun System

Notes: This is a modified Remington 870 shotgun (stock cut off and barrel cut down) which attaches under the barrel of the M-16 series, CAR-15, or M-4 Carbine series.  The rifle magazine is used as the shotgun grip, in the same manner as the M-203.  The following information is for the shotgun part of the weapon only; the M-16, CAR-15, or M-4 works in the normal manner.

Mitchell Escalade

Notes: This is a simple pump-action shotgun. The MS-9111 has a sight rib and bead sights, and the MS-9112 has rifle-style sights to allow accurate firing of slugs or shot.  The stocks and the slide are made of simple Turkish walnut, and most of the metal is blued steel, except for some chromed parts in the bolt and barrel.  The receiver has a claw mount for optical sights.

The MS-9113 and MS-9114 are designed for hunting (particularly turkey hunting), and are not generally found with rifle-style sights (though it is an available option).  The MS-9113 has a 28” barrel and an interchangeable screw-in choke system with 5 chokes; the MS-9114 has a 22” barrel with a fixed choke optimized for turkey hunting.

Mossberg M-500

Notes: An American-made pump shotgun, it is available with folding stocks, Magna-Porting to reduce muzzle climb, pistol grips, sight mounts, and stockless versions, as desired.  It is probably the shotgun with the widest amount of options available without having to make a special order.  It is also known as the M-500 Field.  The M-500 Super is identical to the M-500 for game purposes, but has a checkered semi-pistol grip and slide. The M-500 Crown Grade is a deluxe version, with hand checkering and fancy wood. The Crown Grade Camo is the same, but with a synthetic stock in a camouflage pattern.

Mossberg M-500 Variants

Notes: There are several versions of the M500, designed for specific markets. The M500 Camper is a stockless small-caliber version, with synthetic pistol grip and slide, made for personal defense. The M500 Security (also known as the Home Security) is a short-barreled riot gun with an extended magazine and a foregrip on the pump slide; the furniture is of black synthetic and the external metalwork is blued. The M500 Bullpup is a military weapon, made with matte black synthetic furniture and external metalwork, and with a ported barrel, bayonet lug, and recoil pad.  The M-500 Viking Slug Gun was introduced in 1996; it comes in rifled and non-rifled barrel versions (each with a 24-inch ported barrel), and uses synthetic furniture (usually in dark green) with metalwork which is normally finished in black phosphate.  The 12-gauge Viking Slug Gun is drilled and tapped for a scope mount (the rings and a Tasco 1.5-4.5x scope is normally included when purchased from Mossberg, though I have not included the scope in the cost here), and also has backup iron sights.  1997’s Model 500 USA is essentially a civilian version of the military Mossberg M-500 variants; it has a 20-inch ported barrel, heavy-duty sling swivels, black synthetic furniture, and dark Parkerized external metalwork.  In 1998, the M-500 Trophy Slugster was also introduced, which has a 20-gauge ported rifled barrel, synthetic or walnut furniture, and metalwork finished in black or dull natural metal.  In 2004, the Grand Slam Turkey Variant was introduced; this version comes in two gauges, uses a 20-inch barrel with a ventilated sighting rib atop the ported barrel, adjustable rear sights and a bead front sight (both with light-gathering fiberoptic inserts), and the synthetic stock and external metal finished in one of two camouflaged patterns (Mossy Oak Break-Up or Real-Tree Hardwood). The Grand Slam Turkey is equipped with Extra Full Choke unless otherwise requested by the buyer.  The Viking Slug Gun, Trophy Slugster, and Grand Slam Turkey all have thick rubber recoil pads on the butt.  Viking Slug Guns with rifled barrels and the Trophy Slugster are not recommended for use with shot (especially steel shot), as firing shot through the rifled barrels can easily ruin the rifling. The Bantam is their youth model, with a length pull 25mm shorter and the slide repositioned to help shorter arms; .410 gauge only. It is otherwise similar to the Camper, except that it cannot use magnum ammunition.

The M-500 Mariner is the same as the Security, but has a special Teflon and metal coating that is resistant to salt water, the stock is synthetic, and it has a Speedfeed stock that allows 2 reloads per phase for the 4 rounds in the Speedfeed holder. The ARTR Trap has a full 30-inch barrel with a full choke, to fulfill its sporting role.  The Bullpup is, as the name indicates, a Bullpup version of the M-500; It has full synthetic furniture and a full pistol grip at the firing position as well as on the slide. It has a grip safety on the front pistol grip.  It has rifle-type sights and the external metalwork is deep blued. The Sporting is similar to the standard M-500, and also has a plethora of barrel options, including Accuchoke variable choke muzzles or fixed chokes; the furniture is wood, but may be finished in a camouflage pattern. For game purposes, it is identical to the Standard, but without 30" or 38" barrels, and blued with wood or camouflage stocks and slides.  It can be had with rifle-type sights.

The Mossberg M-500 ATI Scorpion is a thoroughly updated version of the M-500.  It’s a modular shotgun, so the improvements can be added to standard M-500s. Above the receiver is a length of Picatinny rail; two short lengths, just the sizes for tactical lights or lasers, are on either side of the muzzle end.  The barrel is surrounded by al aluminum heat shield which is well-ventilated; the pump-lever is polymer and ergonomically-shaped and patterned.  Sights include a folding BUIS and a blade front sight. The stock is an ATI A2 TactiLite recoil-absorbing stock with a thick recoil pad and further recoil-absorbing furniture, and the pistol grip is further recoil-dampening.  The stock pulls out to six extended positions, and there is also a cheek riser. The tubular magazine can be replaced with a longer one, but it will then extend beyond the muzzle. There are several attachment points for a different variety of slings.  The barrel is 18.5 inches.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The Viking Slug Gun and Model 500 USA are extremely rare variants in the Twilight 2000 timeline; the Trophy Slugster, The ATI Scorpion, and Grand Slam Turkey do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Mossberg M-590

Notes:  The M-590 was first designed as a military/police version of Mossberg’s M-500, and have been in US military service since the early 1990s.  (Civilian versions appeared a short time later.)  Though the M-590 series is to be replaced by the HK/Benelli M-1014, M-590s will probably soldier on for a long time to come.

As with the M-500, the M-590 is at its core a conventional pump-action shotgun.  The M-590 may be had with all-steel metalwork, wooden stocks, extended magazines, and a plethora of other accessories and modifications.  Military versions typically have polymer stocks and pump slides, an aircraft-quality aluminum alloy receiver and magazine tube, a high-quality steel barrel and barrel extension, and aperture rear and blade front sights.  Some military models also may have a bayonet lug, an adjustable ghost ring rear sight, and a perforated aluminum meat shield above the barrel.  Most military models also have ambidextrous controls and an improved extractor.  Military models are almost always chambered for 2.75-inch shells, while civilian and police models (and some military versions acquired for special applications) may have chambers which can take both 2.75-inch and 3” shells.

Variants of the M-590 include the M-590A1, which uses a heavier barrel (primarily for cooling and to increase strength), a safety selector with a different shape which allows the shooter to tell when his weapon is or is not on safe, even in total darkness, and an all-metal trigger guard.  The M-590A1 also comes in a short version with a 14-inch barrel (normal barrel lengths for the M-590 are 18.5 and 20 inches) which is available only to military and law enforcement concerns.  This 14-inch-barreled version can also be had in a stockless configuration, with just a pistol grip.  An unusual variant of the M-590A1 has the Knoxx Sidewinder magazine modification; this replaces the normal tubular magazine with 10-round drum magazine, with attendant changes in the feed mechanism and the fore-end.  The M-590A1 Bantam is another modification of the M-590A1; designed primarily for teenagers and smaller-statured shooters, it is nearly 3 centimeters shorter, accomplished primarily by shortening the stock.

Another variant of the M-590A1 is done by Vang Comp Systems; this version of the Model 590A1 with a 14-inch barrel includes a back-bored barrel, a lengthened forcing cone, a ported barrel, a modified tubular magazine that feeds more reliably, an enlarged safety, a shortened fore-end with a sidesaddle with a spare shell holder (6 shells), and a synthetic pump lever with an attached flashlight receptacle. The stock is a fixed synthetic Davis Speedfeed stock with a compartment for four more shells and includes a recoil pad.  The finish is Mossberg’s new Marinecote, which is highly resistant to corrosion and wear.  The sights are replaced with an adjustable rear ghost ring-type and a front ramp with a luminous white dot.  The barrel is designed to concentrate the shot; it doesn’t have a specific choke per se, but is designed to put most of the pellets into a human torso at 25 meters.

Yet another limited edition version is the M-590A1 Compact.  It’s not actually much shorter than a standard M-590A1, but it’s MIL-STD-1913 rails , extra shell carriers, and accessory sleeves (for a flashlight) allow the shooter to carry a lot of shotgun system in a reasonably small package.  The M-590A1 passes the US Army’s stringent tests (though only testing has gone on so far).  The sidesaddle shell holder carries six rounds, but the M-590A1 Compact also has a Choate extended magazine allowing it to carry two additional rounds over the M-590A1’s normal complement.  Another modification, the SpeedFeed stock, carries another four rounds. Other added components include a bayonet lug for the Army’s standard bayonet.  The receiver is made from 4140 aluminum instead of steel to help lighten the weight.  The locking mechanism is strengthened to compensate for this, though the weight on the whole is still less than comparable shotguns.  The 18.5-inch barrel has a heavy profile, in response to troop requests.  The top of the receiver has a MIL-STD-1913 rail, along with a removable folding BUIS, and front sight also folds and is more rifle-like than the typical shotgun.  The SpeedFeed stock and the slide are also polymer, lightening things further.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The M-590 and M-590A1 are the primary combat shotguns for the US military in the Twilight 2000 timeline, and they are quite common amongst US and Canadian citizens as well.  However, the Knoxx modification for the M-590A1 does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline, nor does the Vang Comp modification.

Mossberg M-835 Ulti-Mag

Notes: The M-835 is a pump-action shotgun designed for 2.75-inch, 3-inch, or 3.5-inch shells.  The stock has a thick recoil pad, and most of these weapons are ported to further reduce felt recoil.  Finish of the metal is typically blued or Parkerized, though camouflage finishes of several types for the stock, fore-end, receiver cover, and barrel are available.  The barrels are backbored; this means that they are slightly larger inside than the chamber.  This slightly reduces recoil, makes the weapon slightly more accurate, keeps the shot pattern from spreading as fast, and reduces wear on the bore.  (This feature is unfortunately not reproducible in game terms.)  There are several versions: The standard M-835 comes in 26 and 28-inch-barrel versions, may have a walnut or synthetic stock, has a ventilated sighting rib, and bead sights on the rib.  (Synthetic-stocked versions weigh the same, but cost $10 more.) The choke is fixed, and is Modified.  The Turkey model has a 24-inch barrel, a synthetic stock, a barrel with an Ulti-Full fixed choke, and adjustable front and rear sights with fiberoptic high-visibility inserts.  There is a short ventilated sighting rib, but it fits between the rear and front sights.  The Grand Slam Turkey model is similar, but has a 20-inch non-ported barrel, and a special fixed choke called by Mossberg “X-Factor.”  The sling, which is also present on the Turkey model, is padded in the Grand Slam Turkey model.  The Flyaway Waterfowl version has a 28” barrel, a sighting rib with front and rear fiberoptic sights, a padded sling, and interchangeable chokes (Modified and Improved Cylinder).  It is otherwise identical to the 28” standard version for game purposes.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These shotguns do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Mossberg M-3000

Notes: Mossberg bought this design from Smith & Wesson in 1986.  They are identical to the Smith & Wesson design, but wear the Mossberg name and are manufactured in Mossberg’s plant in Japan.  The M-3000 is designed for combat, with short barrels and a tough blued or Parkerized finish.  It is a weapon in which jams are easily cleared.  The M-3000 is made from machined steel and has a chromed bolt.  Three choices of stock are available: a side-folding plastic stock; the “Speedfeed” fixed stock, in which four extra rounds may be carried and also with a recoil pad on the butt; and a simple pistol grip with no stock (which Mossberg calls a “Cruiser” grip).  Though Mossberg does not sell extended magazines with the M-3000, but they are available from many sources (Mossberg recommends Choate extended magazines for the M-3000).

A problem with many pump-action shotguns with tubular magazines is a jam which can occur is a round accidentally pops out of the magazine and partially into the chamber when the pump slide is cycled.  The M-3000 has a feature which prevents this jam from occurring.  (Since the introduction of this feature, many other Mossberg shotguns also use it and it has been emulated by other manufacturers.)

Wilson Combat has been given permission by Mossberg to modify the M-3000 and sell those modified versions.  Wilson cuts off the barrel to 7.9 inches (and other barrel lengths are available at customer request), shortens the action bars and magazine tube, moves the barrel mount back, and adds a forward handgrip on the pump slide which can also be folded flush with the rest of the pump slide if desired.  The resulting weapon, called the Executive Protection Shotgun, uses synthetic Pachmayr Vindicator furniture and has no buttstock.  Despite the short barrel, the shot spread is not extreme due to the tight choke used on the barrel; however, muzzle blast and noise are extreme.  Of course, the Executive Protection Shotgun requires either a lot of taxes and red tape to legally acquire, and is therefore used only by certain bodyguards and military and government concerns.

Twilight 2000 Notes: After 1995, new M-3000s are not available in the US, but they are still manufactured in Japan.
