Benelli Nova

Notes: One of the newest Benelli shotguns, the Nova was designed to fire the most powerful 12 Gauge loads and yet be light and ergonomically correct. The synthetic stock has a deep pistol grip, and the pump lever is shaped to be easy to grasp and find without looking. The Nova also has a switch behind the pump lever that locks the tubular magazine and prevents it from loading the chamber; this can be used as a second safety and to allow the user to manually load rounds if necessary. There are three versions; the Nova Slug is, as the name suggests, optimized for firing slugs and has a shorter barrel; it has adjustable rifle-type sights. The standard Nova has longer barrels and has a sighting rig above the barrel, but no other sights. The standard Nova is sold with an interchangeable choke set.

The third Nova is the Nova Tactical, designed primarily for police and military use, but also sold to civilians. This version is strengthened with a steel frame beneath its polymer stock. It is capable of using 2.75-inch, 3-inch, and 3.5-inch shells. The barrel is shortened to 18.5 inches, and it has an extended magazine, allowing it to carry the even more shells its longer-barreled kin. It may still use the same interchangeable chokes as the regular Nova. The front sight is post protected by wings (normally with a white dot, but one with a tritium inlay is available), while the rear sight is an LPA ghost-ring type with a white dot on either side of the aperture. The magazine cutoff button is made so that it must be pressed firmly to operate, to lessen the chance of it being pushed by accident. Though the standard magazine capacities for the Nova Tactical are listed below, extended magazines are available for the Nova Tactical which allow it to carry one more round (add $1 and 0.02 kg), or two more rounds (add $2 and 0.03 kg).

Twilight 2000 Notes: This shotgun does not exist.

Bernardelli B-4 And B-4/B

Notes: This is an Italian-made shotgun that found some acceptance in civilian, police, and military markets worldwide. The weapon, except for the barrel, is made from high-grade aluminum (the barrel is made from steel). It is magazine fed. Some of the users include the US military (in very small numbers), various police departments in the world, and the Italian military. The B-4 may be fired in both pump-action and semiautomatic modes; the B-4/B may be fired in pump action mode only. The folding stock is a thick strut-type with a buttplate. The rear sight is contained in a carrying handle which can also accept AR-15/M-16-type optics and night-vision devices; the front sight is a protected post.

The B-4 and B-4/B are marketed by Springfield in the US and North America, but not built there.

Twilight 2000 Notes: In at least one engagement between US and Italian forces, these shotguns were used by both sides.

Merc 2000 Notes: This promising weapon fell victim to budget cuts in the late 1990s and those that had been produced up to that point were all that were ever made.

Beretta RS-200/202

Notes: These weapons were designed for police and military use, except for the RS-202P, which was designed as a civilian version. They are short-barreled pump-action weapons that are light and handy, and can fire any sort of 2 3/4" or 3" ammunition. There are numerous safeties to prevent accidental discharge. The RS-200P is the base weapon, with a plastic stock; the RS-202M1 has a folding stock; and the RS-202M2 has a folding stock, heat shield above the barrel, and a flash suppressor that doubles as a variable choke mechanism. A feature of the RS-202 series (but not the RS-200) is that a shell can be removed or loaded into the chamber without using the pump slide; this allows a dud shell to be removed, special ammunition to be inserted, or to help make the weapon safe when not using it.

The RS-202P used an oiled walnut stock and pump slide with a light alloy receiver. The stock and the fore-end are equipped with sling swivels. The RS-202P has an aiming rib atop the barrel with a fluorescent ball at the front of the rib. They have an additional safety, a cross-bolt safety at the front of the trigger guard. Barrels are 20.5 inches or 24.5 inches; they have a fixed cylindrical choke, and cannot accept any sort of variable choke devices.

Beretta RS-202 M3P

Notes: This weapon is based on a conventional Beretta shotgun design, the RS-200, but has been built up into a thoroughly militarized weapon. The RS-202 M3P has a folding stock, is fed from a box magazine, can mount most NATO-compatible night vision and telescopic sights, and is equipped with a perforated metal barrel shroud to prevent burns and aid cooling in sustained fire. It has a variable choke device and can fire in both pump-action and semiautomatic modes. The RS-202 M3P was meant to compete directly with the SPAS-12 and SPAS-15, but did not gain as much acceptance. It is used mainly by some European police departments.

Franchi PA-3/215 and PA-3/345

Notes: These are basically concealable, "scattergun" versions of the SPAS-12. The 215 is the smaller of the two, being only 470mm long with the stock folded; the 345 is longer at 600mm with the stock folded, and having a larger magazine capacity. Due to the smaller size, the facility for semiautomatic fire is removed. The pump-action grip on the 215 has a pistol grip on it; the 345 has a conventional grip. The stock on the 215 can be totally removed for maximum concealment, while on the 345 it cannot be removed.

Franchi SAS-12

Notes: The SAS-12 is a more conventional shotgun than the SPAS-11 or -12 below. It is a bit long for a combat shotgun (with a 21-inch barrel), but the SAS-12 is very light and well-balanced, and this does a great deal to make up for the length. The SAS-12 comes with a set of interchangeable chokes that allow the weapon to be adapted to nearly any situation, from duck hunting to crowd control with rubber pellets. The sights are somewhat deficient, being only low bead sights, and the position of the front sling swivel can get in the way of the slide’s operation.

FABARM SDASS

Notes: Designed primarily for military and law enforcement use, the SDASS has a secondary role to appeal to civilian buyers as well. There are four board categories of the SDASS – The Pro Forces, the Tactical, the Heavy Combat, and the Martial. All are pump-action shotguns, for a reason – the use of pump action allows the SDASS to use virtually sort of 12-gauge 2.75" or 3" ammunition, as well as some special rounds which must be manually loaded into the chamber. All of the SDASS shotguns use a ghost ring rear sight and a protected blade front sight, with the rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. All SDASSs also have a MIL-STD-1913 rail atop the receiver. Virtually all of them are available with several different stocks, including conventional wooden stocks (of beech) or conventional synthetic stocks, synthetic stocks with pistol grips, and folding tubular metal stocks. All but the folding stocks are adjustable for length of pull via spacers.

The Pro Forces is the basic shotgun, with 20-inch barrel. The Heavy Combat is simply a Pro Forces with heavier barrel and a standard muzzle brake/standoff device like that mounted as an option to the SAT-8. Both the Pro Forces and Heavy Combat use a synthetic stock with a full pistol grip. The Tactical is also similar to the Pro forces, but uses a conventional configuration and may have a wooden or synthetic stock.

The Martial uses a shorter 18-inch barrel and a shorter tubular magazine. The Martial comes in several versions; the Martial Wood has a conventional beechwood stock, the Martial Composite uses a synthetic conventional stock, the Martial Compact uses a folding tubular metal stock, and the Martial Short has no stock (though the "no-stock" unit may be replaced with the stock of the Pro Forces version).

Franchi SPAS-11/SPAS-12/LAW-12

Notes: The SPAS-11 (Special Purpose Automatic Shotgun) is a shotgun that was designed from the outset for police and military use rather than civilian sporting. It was meant to be intuitive to aim and shoot, and require as little training as possible for effective use. The butt is a folding one that can be locked under the arm to allow one-handed shooting. The finish is utilitarian, with a light alloy frame sandblasted and phosphated in black. Perhaps the most unusual aspect of the SPAS-11 is its action; with a simple push of a button, the shotgun may be switched from semiautomatic to pump-action. This allows the SPAS-11 to have the firepower of a semiautomatic shotgun, yet switch to pump-action to allow the use of ammunition that will not fed properly in semiautomatic mode, or simply to conserve ammunition. Another unusual feature is the ability to use certain muzzle attachments; one is a shot spreader that reduces the short range to 10 meters (and spreads the pattern much earlier), and an adapter that allows the SPAS-11 to fire rifle or conventional grenades. The SPAS-11 was phased out in favor of the SPAS-12, but can still be found in good numbers in Italy.

The SPAS-12 may be regarded as a more-developed version of the SPAS-11. The SPAS-12 has most of the same features and construction as the SPAS-11, but the folding stock is shaped with a distinctive "curl" at the end which allows one-handed firing while bracing the stock under the arm. A fixed polymer stock for the SPAS-12 is also available, but not very common. In addition to the shot spreader and grenade launcher, the SPAS-12 may also be equipped with a mount atop the receiver for optical sights or other accessories. The SPAS-12 may also be given any sort of choke required through the use of screw-in choke tubes.

Developed from the SPAS-12, the LAW-12 is basically a semiautomatic-only version of the SPAS-12. It is considered one of the best Italian combat shotguns – light, long-barreled, and equally adept at firing shot, slugs, or special ammunition. The combination of light weight and a pistol grip allow for easy one-handed shooting, and the LAW-12 has an interchangeable choke system as well as being able to use the same accessories as the SPAS-11 and SPAS-12. The LAW-12 has two safeties, a large safety on the right front of the trigger guard for normal safing of the weapon (locking both the bolt and the magazine), and a quick reaction safety on the left front of the trigger guard that can be quickly flicked off for combat use. If only the quick reaction safety is used, the user may change the shell in the chamber while not having to unload the entire magazine. Standard sights are rifle-types similar to those of the SPAS-12, but the LAW-12 can also be equipped with a variety of sight and accessory mounts, including a MIL-STD-1913 rail. Standard construction includes metalwork of lightweight steel for the receiver and magazine and heavier steel for the working parts and the 21.5-inch barrel. The stock is normally synthetic with a pistol grip and a synthetic fore-end, but the buttstock may be replaced with a folding stock similar to that of the SPAS-11, or a skeletonized synthetic Choate lightweight stock.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The SPAS-12 was in common issue to US Army and Marine MPs and Air Force SPs during the Twilight War. The LAW-12 is a rather rare weapon, normally used only by Italian armed forces.

Franchi SPAS-15

Notes: The SPAS-15 began in the mid-1980s as an attempt to turn the SPAS-12 into a magazine-fed weapon and resulted in a new weapon related to the SPAS-12 only to a very small extent. The original impetus for the development of the SPAS-15 came a request from NATO and the US for a new combat shotgun (the same one that generated weapons such as the H&K CAWS), but in the end, the requirement for a new combat shotgun was dropped. Low-rate sales ensued until 1999, when the Italian Army bought some 2000 SPAS-15s for use in peacekeeping operations in the Balkans.

Though the SPAS-15 is also a shotgun which can function semiautomatically or by pump-action, the operation of the SPAS-15 is very different from the SPAS-11 or SPAS-12. In semiautomatic mode, the SPAS-15 is a gas-operated rotating bolt weapon, while in pump-action mode, it does function in a similar manner to the SPAS-12. The SPAS-15 is very different internally due to being a magazine-fed weapon instead of feeding from an underbarrel tube. The receiver of the SPAS-15 is all-steel, as is the barrel; magazines are proprietary and made from aluminum, while parts such as the stock, pump slide, and pistol grip are of high-impact plastic. The top of the receiver has a rear notch sight within a carrying handle; the front sight is a hooded blade. The carrying handle is capable of mounting some accessories or optics, but the selection is narrow and this is not the handle’s primary function. Underneath the carrying handle is the charging handle. Most SPAS-15s have been built with a side-folding stock, but a fixed stock is also available. Barrels are 18 or 24 inches, with the 18-inch barrel being far more common than the 24-inch barrel. Both have bores which are chrome-plated. The barrels may be given virtually any choke using screw-in choke tubes. The muzzle can mount grenade launchers and shot spreaders like those of the SPAS-11 and SPAS-12, or a standoff attachment which also functions as a muzzle brake.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The Italians made significant use of the SPAS-15 during the Twilight War.

Sabatti PG-95

Notes: The PG-95 was one of Sabatti’s few pump-action offerings, and was produced from 1995-2002. Chambered for 12 gauge 3-inch shells, the PG-95 comes in a hunting version and a slug version (designed for slugs, sabots, and coarse shot; it is not recommended for buckshot). The PG-95 Hunting has a choice of two barrel lengths and comes with a set of interchangeable chokes. The action is based on a falling block action. The PG-95 Hunting has a walnut stock and slide; finish is usually a matte satin varnish, but a camouflage finish was also available. The PG-95 Hunting has non-adjustable rifle-type sights instead of a sighting rib.

The PG-95 Slug version uses a shorter 24-inch barrel and has a rear Williams-type leaf-sight adjustable for height, and a bead-type front sight. It also comes in a camouflage finish, but that sort of finish was more common on the PG-95 Slug.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This shotgun is extremely rare in the Twilight 2000 timeline; exports of the PG-95 were banned by the Italian government within a month after its introduction.

Valtro

Though this weapon looks very similar to the Russian Saiga series, it predates that design and owes nothing to Kalashnikov. It is one of the best Italian-designed combat shotguns, and is a pump-action magazine-fed weapon that is compact and light despite the magazine feed and long barrel length. The stock is synthetic, as is the pistol grip, and the Valtro has an interchangeable choke system. A version with a short 14-inch barrel is also available. It is reportedly easy to fire one-handed, especially in the 14-inch-barrel version.

Verona MX-301-12

Notes: Though made in Italy, the MX-301-12 gets most of its sales in the US and Canada, imported by PMC of Nevada. It is designed for police use, with features that police prefer such as a short barrel, extended magazine, rifle-type sights, a sling, a tough, non-corrosive finish, an extra-large ejection port, easy to manipulate controls, and a stock that can hold an additional four shotgun shells.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This weapon does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.
