Weatherby Athena Side-by-Side

Notes: This classic-style double-barreled shotgun was introduced in 2002.  They are actually manufactured by the Spanish firm of Zabala, and sold by Weatherby.  The Athena Side-by-Side features a slender English-style stock with a straight wrist made of excellent quality Turkish walnut, oil finished and polished by hand.  Locking is of the Anson & Deeley type, with actual side locks and plates.  The breech is tempered steel and the firing pins are fitted with coiled springs.  The weapon has a single trigger, though twin triggers are available upon demand.  The breech has automatic ejectors, and these are selective so that only spent spells are ejected.  The side plates engraved with rosettes. The Athena Side-by-Side has a Briley IMC interchangeable choke system, with a full set comprising Extra Full, Full I, Full II, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, Skeet, and Cylinder.  The standard gauges are 12 and 20, though 16 gauge is also available through the Weatherby Custom Shop.  All use 3-inch shells.  The standard barrels are 28 inches.  The stock has a rubber recoil pad.

A variant of the Athena Side-by-Side is the Athena D’Italia; this gun was introduced in 2005.  The D’Italia has an action and breech milled from a single block of alloy steel and chromed with a finish known as “Silver Slade.”  The parts are hand-fitted, and the side plates are hand-engraved.  The gun comes in 12, 20, and 28 gauge models, with a 28-inch barrel for the 12 gauge model and a 26-inch barrel for the others.  The 12 gauge and 20 gauge guns come in 2.75-inch and 3-inch chamber versions, and the 28 gauge comes in 2.75-inch chambers only.  The D’Italia has no recoil pad for the butt.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These guns are not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Weatherby Athena Over-and-Under

Not related to the Athena Side-by-Side except in name, the Athena Over-and-Under shotgun dates from 1982 and was built by the Japanese company of SKB.  The Athena Over-and-Under is a quite strong weapon, with Kersten locking, double barrel block locking, and a transverse locking lug which slide through the locking bolts.  The breech has automatic shell ejectors, though unfired cartridges are merely extracted.  A safety device prevents the weapon from being accidentally fired if the safety is on, even if dropped, bumped, or the trigger is pulled.  The Athena Over-and-Under has a single selective trigger, with the barrel selector being a switch.  From 1984, the Athena Over-and-Under was equipped with Briley interchangeable chokes; before this, the choke was fixed according to the wishes of the buyer.  There are several variants of the Athena Over-and-Under.

The Grade III Classic Field has a Prince of Wales oil-finished walnut stock, engraved pheasants on the side plates (inlaid with gold, and the side plates are finished silver-gray), a ventilated sighting rib above the top barrel, and cooling slots between the barrels.  This shotgun was not available until 1999.

The Grade IV Field was the original model, dating from 1982, and has a standard pistol grip wrist stock made of varnished American walnut, a pistol grip cap of rosewood, side plates with a silver nitrate finish (engraved with floral motifs), a sighting rib above the top barrel, cooling slots between the barrels, and a thick rubber recoil pad on the butt.

The Grade V Classic Field was introduced in 1993, and has a stock of oil-finished American walnut in the Prince of Wales pattern, silver-nitrate finished side plates with light engraving, and a top barrel with a ventilated sighting rib.  It differs from the Grade III Classic Field primarily in the form of the stock and the engraving, and the lack of a 28 gauge version.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The Grade III Classic Field is not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.  The Grade V Classic field is somewhat rare.

Weatherby Orion Side-by-Side

Notes: Introduced by Weatherby at virtually the same time as the Athena Side-by-Side in 2002, the Orion Side-by-Side is also built by the Spanish company of Zabala.  Like the Athena, the Orion has a fine walnut stock, but the stock is of a style known as the Prince of Wales style, in which the stock is still rather slender, but there is a shallow pistol grip wrist which is rounded off on the bottom.  The fore-end is also widened to allow a better grip.  The butt has a thick rubber pad.  The Orion Side-by-Side also has a single trigger, but it is selective, with the safety catch behind the locking lever also acting as a barrel selector.  The Orion Side-by-Side is available in a four gauges; all but the 28 gauge model use 3-inch chambers.  Most of the gauges use the same Briley interchangeable chokes as the Athena Side-by-Side, but the .410 gauge model has fixed chokes with one barrel having a Modified choke and the other having an Improved Cylinder choke.  Barrels for all gauges may be had in 26 or 28-inch lengths.

It should be noted that the Orion Side-by-Side is not currently listed on Weatherby’s web site, and may have been discontinued.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This shotgun is not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Weatherby Orion Over-and-Under

Notes: Like the Athena Over-and-Under, the Orion dates from 1982 and is built by the Japanese firm of SKB.  The Orion Over-and-Under has a shorter breech than the Athena and does not have the extended side plates of the Athena. It also has Kersten locking with double barrel block locking, but the locking lugs engage into recesses in the top of the breech.  There is also a solid transverse bolt which is engaged by the locking lever.  The Orion has automatic case ejection, except in the case of an unfired cartridge, which is merely extracted.  There are several safety features which ensure the Orion will not fire by accident.  The Orion has a single selective trigger, with barrel selection done with a pushbutton.  Until 1984, the Orion was offered with the shooter’s choice of fixed chokes, but after that, the Orion was sold with Briley interchangeable chokes.  There are literally a plethora of versions of the Orion.

Field Gun versions include the Orion Grade II Classic Field, which has a varnished Prince of Wales-style stock.  It was brought out in 1993.  The breech is engraved with plant motifs and flying cock pheasants.  Three barrel lengths are available for the 12 gauge model, two for the 20 gauge model, and one for the 28 gauge model.  The Orion Grade III Classic Field uses a slender Prince of Wales-style stock which is oil-finished, and the engravings on the side plates are of gold-inlaid pheasants.  The Grade III is not available in 28 gauge, nor is it available with a 30-inch barrel, but it is otherwise identical to the Grade II in game terms.  The Orion Grade III English Field did not appear until 1997, and has an English-style slender stock of fine walnut.  A gold-inlaid flying pheasant is engraved on the side plates.  The 12 gauge model is available only with a 28-inch barrel, but the Grade III English Field is otherwise identical to the Grade II for game purposes.  The Grade I Field is the standard version of the Orion, with a plain blued breech and a pistol grip wrist stock. It is available only for 12 and 20 gauges, but is otherwise identical to the Grade II Field for game purposes.  There is also a Grade III Field, which is identical to the Grade I Field except for engraved side plates; it is otherwise identical to the Grade I.  The Orion Upland appeared in 1999. It has a plain blued breech, and a varnished walnut Prince of Wales-style stock.  It is available only in 12 and 20 gauges with 26 or 28-inch barrels, but is otherwise identical to the Grade II for game purposes.   All have a ventilated sighting rib above the top barrel.

Sporting versions of the Orion include the Grade II Classic Sporting, introduced in 1993.  This version has a Prince of Wales-style stock of polished walnut, a breech with a silver nitrate finish, and light engraving for the side plates.  The top barrel has a ventilated sighting rib, and there are cooling slots between the barrels.  The Grade II Classic Sporting uses Briley IMC interchangeable chokes, which include Skeet, Improved Cylinder, Modified, and special SC1 and SC2 compensated chokes.  The Grade II Sporting was introduced in 1992, and has a pistol grip wrist stock made from varnished walnut.  The front grip is wider than standard and has a finger grip for a surer hold.  It is otherwise identical to the Grade III Classic Sporting for game purposes.  The Super Sporting Clays version appeared in 1998; it has a pistol grip wrist stock made of oil-finished walnut.  The front grip is wider than normal and slightly curved outwards at the bottom to provide a better grip.  The butt has a Pachmayr Decelerator butt plate to reduce recoil.  The top barrel has an extra-wide sighting rib, and there are cooling slots between the barrels.  The barrel has compensator slots near the muzzle which further reduce recoil; these slots are not blocked by the interchangeable chokes.  The trigger is adjustable, selective, and gold-plated.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The following versions of the Orion Over-and-Under do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline: Grade III English Field, Orion Upland, and the Super Sporting Clays.  This shotgun is largely built in Japan in this timeline, and is distributed as far away as Thailand and Alaska.

Winchester 21

Notes: Said to be one of the finest double-barreled shotguns ever produced, The Model 21 is a much sought-after collectible firearm, and fetches huge prices in real life.  It was originally produced to address a large whole in Winchester’s shotgun line – the lack of a high-quality side-by side shotgun to compete with those produced by several other companies of the time.  The Model 21 was introduced in 1930, and sold for what was then a decent monthly salary.  The Model 21 was an unusual design for the time, having no topbolt, instead relying on its strong hinge pin and long action bar for locking.  The boxlock was originally based on the common (for the time) Anson & Deeley design, but quickly departed from that boxlock design, with hammers and cocking rods controlled by powerful coil springs.  The barrels are fitted together with a vertical dovetail, often called an underlump or chopper lump design.  When first produced, the Model 21 was made for 12 and 20 gauge 2.75” and 3” shells, without a sighting rib.  A sighting rib was soon added due to customer demand, and a 16-gauge model was also added.  A 28-gauge version was built to special order, and .410 gauge versions were also made to special order, made on the 16/20-gauge frame.  (They were actually heavier than the 20-gauge version, being designed primarily for skeet shooting).  These custom guns were first offered in 1933, along with versions with ornate engraving.  The Model 21 was discontinued during World War 2, and the custom-made guns were not offered again until 1960, though Model 21 production was picked up again in 1951.  Ventilated barrel ribs also appeared in 1951.  The last frames for the Model 21 were made in 1955, though the gun was built until 1970.

Winchester 22

Notes: A development of the Winchester 21, the Winchester 22 is a more basic model with a walnut stock and fore-end, and a plain matte black breech.  The barrels and chambers have a lining of hard chrome for corrosion resistance and protection against the throwing of slugs.  The Winchester 22 is made only for 12 and 16 gauge, and the barrels have fixed chokes (one Full, one Modified) and only one length of 28 inches.  There is also a “deluxe” with a nickel-plated breech, but this is identical to the basic version in game terms.  The Winchester 22 has twin triggers.  This model was built from 1959-78.

Winchester 23

Notes: Yet a further development of the Model 21, the Winchester 23 replaced the Model 21 and Model 22 in production in 1978.  The Winchester 23 uses a box lock, like its predecessors.  The barrels are 28 inches long, and may be had with fixed chokes of Modified for one barrel and Full for the other, or Winchoke interchangeable chokes.  The pistol grip wrist is semi-rounded, and known as an Imperial grip.  The trigger is single and selective, with the safety catch doubling as a barrel selector.  The original Winchester 23 was made for 12 gauge with 3-inch chambers, but in 1979 a 20 gauge model appeared, using 27.125-inch barrels and having a straight English-style stock.  In 1984 a version known as the Winchester 23 UK appeared; this version has a straight English-style stock, but is otherwise identical to the standard 12 gauge model for game purposes.  In 1986, Winchester brought out the Model 23 Classic; this version is designed for several gauges, and uses 26-inch barrels.  The last version of the Model 23 was the Classic Wildfowl; this version uses 28-inch barrels, is made for two gauges, and uses Winchoke interchangeable chokes.  All these models were produced until 1990, when Winchester stopped producing side-by-side shotguns.

Winchester 96 Expert

Notes: The Model 96 Expert over-and-under shotgun (or Xpert as it is called in its export form) was built only in small numbers and only for a short time relative to other Winchester weapons, from 1976-83.  The Expert comes in three models: the Expert Field, in 12 and 20 gauge with 3-inch chambers, 26-inch barrels with fixed chokes (one barrel had Improved Cylinder, and the other a Modified choke), or 28-inch barrels with fixed chokes of Modified and Full, or 30-inch barrels with fixed Full chokes for both barrels.  The Expert Skeet uses 2.75-inch chambers in 12 or 20 gauge and a 27-inch barrel with fixed Skeet chokes for both.  The Expert Trap is a 12-gauge-only gun, with 2.75-inch chambers, and 30-inch barrels with fixed Full chokes for both.  All three have very finely-finished walnut stocks and fore-ends, and polished blued side plates which are engraved and sometimes gold-inlaid.  The barrels are also polished blued.  The butt has a recoil pad.  They may have double or single selective triggers.

For a short time in 1987, Winchester tried putting a no-frills version of the Model 96 on the market, called the Model 91.  It was not successful, and quickly pulled from the market.  For game purposes, it is identical to the Expert Field.

Winchester 101

Notes: Dating from 1963, the Model 101 is an over-and-under shotgun at first designed strictly as a Field model, though later other versions were introduced.  The Field model comes in four gauges and two chamber sizes (depending upon the gauge).  Three barrel lengths were offered, and the barrels have fixed chokes of either Improved Cylinder for one barrel and Medium for the other, or Medium for one barrel and Full for the other, according to the buyer’s wishes.  The Model 101 Field has a walnut stock and fore-end, and a steel breech and side plates with light engraving.  The Model 101 has a single selective trigger, with the barrel being selected by the tang-mounted selector/safety. The top barrel has a ventilated sighting rib.

In 1965, the Model 101 Trap was introduced; this version was built for 12 and 20 gauge with 30-inch barrels.  These come only with 2.75-inch chambers.  The Model 101 Skeet is similar, but has only 26-inch barrels for 12 and 20 gauge and 28-inch barrels for 28 and .410 gauge.  Also in 1965, a Single Barrel Trap model was introduced, again similar to the Model 101 Trap but with only one barrel and using very long barrel lengths.  In 1965, the Model 101 Field Magnum also appeared, similar to the Model 101 Field but only in a 30-inch barrel version and with 3-inch 12 gauge or 20 gauge chambers, with fixed Full chokes for both barrels.

In 1974, the Model 101 Pigeon Grade Trap was introduced; this is a deluxe model with a larger barrel rib that also has a sight bead at the front and midway along the rib.  The breech is nickel-plated, the side plates are hand-engraved, and the stock and fore-end are made from select French walnut.  It is otherwise identical to the Field model for game purposes.  In 1981, the Model 101 Waterfowl appeared; this is a 12 gauge 3-inch chamber gun with a 30-inch barrel and a fixed choke of the customer’s choice.  (It is identical to the Model 1012 Field Magnum for game purposes.) In 1986, all fixed choke models were replaced with ones using Winchoke interchangeable chokes.

In 1987, the Model 101 Lightweight was brought out.  This model is identical to the Field model, except for its lighter weight, achieved through the use of more modern manufacturing and metallurgy techniques, and the use of a short 26-inch barrel.  In 1993, the rights to the Model 101 series were sold to US Repeating Firearms; however, in the same year, some minor modifications were made to the former Model 101 series and the line was put back on the market as the Model 1001.  Production finally stopped in 1996.

However, production started again in the mid-2000s.  These new-production Model 101s hold for the most part true to their older counterparts, but due to improved metallurgy and production methods, they are lighter than the original Model 101s.  They also have a ventilated rubber recoil pad on the butt, are more restricted in gauge choices, and the selection of barrel lengths is different.  They are also chambered for different mixes of standard and magnum ammunition, and have back-bored chambers.  All can take screw-in adjustable choke tubes. The Model 101 Pigeon Grade Trap Adjustable Comb is a special version which, as the name suggests, has an adjustable cheekpiece, but is otherwise for game purposes identical to the standard Pigeon Grade Trap.

Winchester Supreme

Notes: Known for its odd and complicated locking method, the over-and-under Supreme appeared in 2000.  Along both sides of the top barrel there is a recessed area; when the gun closes, two locking bars slide out of the breech and lock into these recesses.  The hinging point of the gun is between the two barrels, instead of the more common method of being below the two barrels.  This locking method is one that Beretta dropped some time ago due to the difficulty of manufacture.  There are two variants.  The Supreme Hunting uses 28 inch barrel topped with a ventilated sighting rib.  The barrels are back-bored, and are equipped with Invector interchangeable chokes.  The chambers are chromed, as are the side plates. The Supreme Hunting uses a double trigger.  The Supreme Sporting may have one of two barrel lengths and is heavier than the Supreme Hunting.  The sighting rib is wider, and the interchangeable chokes used are the Invector Plus set.  The Supreme Sporting has a single selective trigger.  Both have an oil-finished walnut stock with a pistol grip wrist, and a butt with a recoil pad.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These guns do not exist.
