Mercedes-Benz C-Class
1994-00
This is the
smallest and least expensive of the Mercedes-Benz line, which does not make it
an inexpensive vehicle by any means.
Like all Mercedes, the C-Class is well known for its reliability and
safety. The C-Class may be equipped
with one of six engines, two low-power, high fuel efficiency 4-cylinder ones
that differ only slightly in mileage, a more powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder, a
slightly more powerful 6-cylinder, a high power 6-cylinder engine, and a very
powerful 8-cylinder engine. The
only problem with these engines (all of them) is that takeoff power is not
great, and up to about 50 kph, they accelerate poorly, seeming to suddenly
acquire a large increase in power after that point.
The automatic transmission tends to deliver sloppy upshifts, though
downshifts are smooth and prompt.
Steering response is crisp, and handling is firm and sure.
The firm suspension means that a lot of bumps are passed to the interior,
however. Road noise, especially
from the rear tires, can get loud.
The interior is less spacious than you might expect from a car costing as much
as it RL does, and tall drivers might not have enough head or legroom to be
comfortable, especially if there are passengers in the rear seat.
The trunk is large, square, flat, and low, easy to load, and there is an
optional folding rear seat to increase cargo room.
Of course, the options are profuse and plush, encompassing almost
anything a driver or passenger could want.
It should be
noted that, while the 147 hp and 148 hp engines have almost the same power and
perform identically for game purposes, the 148 hp engine has more torque than
the 147 hp engine and accelerates more quickly. (There’s not really a game
mechanic for this, it’s a GM’s call.)

These are more
athletic sedans that are also more practical in interior space and cargo
capacity. They are comparable in
handling to cars such as the BMW 5-series or Lexus GS, and as much or even more
luxurious. The only bad place to
sit is in the center in the rear seat, due to the large transmission tunnel.
The third seat in the wagon model is better sized for young teenagers or
children than adults; it folds flat for cargo carrying.
Visibility is excellent in all directions, and acceleration quick, even
in the turbodiesel model. The 275
hp I-6 Diesel, as opposed to the turbodiesel, has an engine with massive torque
(1296 foot/pounds), with 4.4 times the torque of its turbodiesel cousin.
