GMC Jimmy 1987-94

Notes: This is described by the company as a cleaner, more modern version of the Chevy S-10 Blazer.  It is mostly the same as that vehicle, down to the weight, but has a few improvements.  Dual airbags are present on 1992 models or later, and the rear wheels have antilock brakes, with four-wheel antilock brakes becoming standard in 1994.  A third engine is available, a powerful turbocharged V-6.    Towing with the base engine is 1.9 tons, 2.06 tons with the 200-horsepower engine, and 2.77 tons with the turbocharged engine. As with many civilian vehicles, legroom in the rear seats is a bit tight for adults.

GMC Jimmy 1995-00

Notes: This is based on the chassis and body of the Chevrolet Blazer of the same time period, but is considerably lighter.  This lightened construction means the Jimmy is not as rugged as the Blazer, but it is more maneuverable, corners better, climbs a bit better, and gets better fuel mileage.  Like the Blazer, the Jimmy's automatic transmission tends to pause for a moment while shifting, and the Jimmy has several suspension choices, ranging from street soft to off-road firm.  The Jimmy handles more like a car than a truck, and feeling is precise. Braking is firm, though the brake pedal feels a bit mushy.  Towing capacity is 2.28 tons.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This vehicle was not produced beyond the 1995 model year, as GMC shifted production to military vehicles.

GMC Safari 1990-97

Notes: This vehicle was produced as the GMC twin to the Chevrolet Astro, and it differs only in minute details from that minivan.  It is produced on a heavy truck chassis instead of the light truck chassis of most minivans, and its engines have more torque and towing capacity than most minivans.  The Safari was infamous for its poor crash performance, often leading to vehicle fires, massive body and frame damage, and severe injuries for the occupants.  This situation improved a little with the introduction of a driver's airbag in 1994, and dual airbags in 1995, but crash ratings were sub-par.  Though the engine has a lot of power, handling is a bit sloppy and steering difficult, even with power steering.  Ride is poor on anything but smooth roads.  Towing is 2.09 tons with the 150 and 165-horsepower engines, and 2.3 tons with the 175 and 200-horsepower engines.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This vehicle was not produced beyond the 1995 model year.

GMC Sierra 1990-98

This is basically GMC's version of the Chevrolet C/K pickup, and differs primarily in the engines used.  Like the C/K, there is a lot of towing power and passing power, but the cornering can be difficult, especially if the cargo bed is empty.  Braking can be likewise tricky with an unladen bed.  Handling is good in most situations, as the Sierra is equipped with a sports suspension.  Visibility is excellent, and the cab is spacious, even for large or tall people. Ride in the short wheelbase versions is harsh, and ride in long wheelbase versions is only a little better.  Towing capacity is 2.2 tons with the 200 horsepower V-6, 2.47 tons with the 230 horsepower V-8, 2.91 tons with the 255 horsepower V-8, 3.56 tons with the 290 horsepower V-8, 2.21 tons with the 140 horsepower or 155 horsepower V-8 diesels, and 3.12 tons with the 190 horsepower V-8 Turbodiesel.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Beyond the 1995 model year, the Sierra was primarily produced for military and law enforcement concerns.

GMC Sonoma 1994-00

This is GMC's version of the Chevrolet S-10 pickup, and differs primarily in having a heavier, more robust construction and better suspension.  Like the S-10, it is a compact pickup, but it is a stronger vehicle than the S-10 and does better in crashes and off road.  The heavier weight and more robust suspension means that the Sonoma soaks up bumps and ruts better than the S-10, but handling and cornering suffers somewhat, as does acceleration, since the Sonoma uses the same engines as the S-10.  The typical Sonoma is also slightly more expensive than its S-10 counterpart.  Towing capacity is 1.25 tons with the 118 horsepower I-4, 2.25 tons with the 155 and 180 horsepower V-6s, and 2.5 tons with the 195 horsepower V-6.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Not considered good for military and law enforcement purposes, the Sonoma was produced for civilians until the 1995 model year.

GMC Suburban 1994-99

Notes: The Suburban is a standard sort of SUV, with a boxy shape and windows from the front to the back.  However, it is a large SUV, with three rows of seats and in a class with Ford’s Expedition.  All Suburbans guzzle gas except for the ones powered by the 190-horsepower TurboDiesel engine. Though power in the TurboDiesel is poor, torque is considerable and Suburbans equipped with this engine can tow 3.12 tons. Other towing abilities are 2.2 tons for the 190-horsepower and 210-horsepower gasoline engines, 2.91 tons with the 250 and 255-horsepower engines, and 3.56 tons for the 230 and 290-horsepower engines.  Passengers in the front and middle-row seats have good headroom and legroom, but the third row seat will require some scrunching for adults, and are better suited for children or removed for more cargo space (it does not fold flat). The step-in to the vehicle is not as high as many SUVs, but climbing into the rear seats for an adult is sort of a gymnastic routine. The windows are large and visibility is excellent. The Suburban is good off-road and on bumpy roads, absorbing bumps well and without excessive floating. Unfortunately, the Suburban suffers from a lot of body lean in turns.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Beyond the 1995 model year, the Suburban was produced primarily for military and law enforcement concerns.

GMC Yukon/Denali 1994-00

Notes: Sort of a GMC version of the Chevy Blazer/Tahoe, the Yukon and Denali with the Yukon being equivalent to the Blazer and the Denali being a fuller luxury version equivalent of the Tahoe, and both in a class with Ford’s Expedition. The base 200 and 210-horsepower engines are underpowered for the weight of these vehicles, and the 250 and 255-horsepower engines are only moderately adequately-powered due to the vehicle’s weight, though they possess considerable torque and pass and accelerate with authority. The TurboDiesel has poor power but excellent torque for towing capacity. The suspensions are tuned for on-road comfort and passengers do not fare as well off-road. Two-door models tend to have a choppier ride and tend to rock when passing and turning. The power steering overassists the steering control, though feel is still precise. Legroom and headroom are comfortable both in front and back, with the back particularly comfortable in the 4-door version. Four-doors have particularly ample interior space and cargo carrying capacity. Towing capacity is 2.2 tons on the 200 and 210-horsepower engines, 2.91 tons on the 250 and 255-horsepower engines, and 3.12 tons for the 180-horsepower TurboDiesel.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Beyond the 1995 model year, the Yukon was produced primarily for military and law enforcement concerns. The upscale Denali was not for the most part considered applicable for a military vehicle except as a staff car.
