Sako 85
Notes: The Model
85 series essentially replaces the Model 75 series; the names of the
specifications are generally the same or similar, and the overall design is
similar, particularly in the stock. Most of the Model 85s specific models come
in a plethora of chamberings; this because the Model 85 is meant to appeal both
to North American and European shooters. Finishes can vary, but most feature
well-finished fine wood stock, often oil polished or hand-rubbed.
Most of the time, the exterior metalwork is blued, generally to a matte
finish. Most versions can also have
stainless steel metalwork, in which case the metal will have a satin finish.
Whether blued or not, the barrels are of stainless steel. In most cases, the
pistol grip wrists capped with fine contrasting wood or plastic; the fore-ends
are usually capped in the same way over a Schnabel fore-end. Actions range from
XS to L, but in Twilight 2000 terms, they dont translate.
Most Model 85s have floating medium-weight barrels that are cold-hammer
forged. Sights for most models are in the scout position and are adjustable;
they are also drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Model 85s are known for their
light weight, even in the heftier chamberings; the penalty for this light weight
is, of course, recoil and muzzle rise.
Model 85
Bavarian
The Model 85
Bavarian uses high grade walnut for the stock, oil finished and polished. The
fore-end and pistol grip wrist are capped in rosewood, with a Schnabel Tip for
the fore-end. Fore-ends and pistol grip wrists are hand-checkered. The stock has
a Bavarian-style cheek swell, and the butt is textured hard rubber. Chamberings
can range from 20-inch short barrels for short magnum cartridges to the
alternative 24.375-inch long barrel for the short magnums and standard for other
magnums. The barrels may be ordered
with threaded muzzles to use with various muzzle devices or suppressors.
Iron sights are in the scout position, and the receiver is drilled and
tapped for scope mounts. There are
sling swivels under the fore-end and under the stock.
The Bavarian
Carbine is similar in many ways to a standard Bavarian Rifle; however, the
Carbine has a full Mannlicher stock and a shorter 20-inch barrel. For game
purposes, the Carbines characteristics and game stats are identical to
20-inch-barrel versions of the Bavarian Rifle. However, the Bavarian Carbine is
not chambered in 7mm-08 Remington, or 9.3x62mm Mauser.

Bear Series
Notes: As is
obvious by the name, the Bear Series of the Model 85 was designed to tackle
bears and similar-sized game. They
are, again, light rifles for the cartridges they fire, with the appropriate pros
and cons. The sights are in the
scout position, and the receiver is dovetailed for scope bases. The Bear Series
is made from gray synthetic furniture with matte blued external metalwork. Bear
Series rifles have a heavy-profile barrel which is specially bedded, and the
barrel is fluted. The stock has special soft rubber gripping points in
appropriate places. Triggers are
single-stage, but adjustable for pull weight.
Bolt throw is small and short.
The Black Bear
uses the lowest-caliber chamberings of the series, though some are reasonably
powerful, and adequate for their job.
Barrels are uniformly 21.25 inches.
The Brown Bear uses basically the same design, but the stock is of brown
laminated hardwood instead of a synthetic stock like on the Black Bear.
Most other features are essentially the same, though the fore-end and
pistol grip wrist are checkered instead of rubber grip pads.
The Brown Bear is chambered in only two rounds, both large Magnums.
New, introduced
at the end of 2012, is the Grizzly.
The Grizzly is a deluxe version of the Kodiak, made of high-grade walnut, a
hand-checkered pistol-grip wrist and fore-end, a rosewood cap for the fore-end
and pistol grip wrist, and deep-polished, blued metalwork.
The barrels are 21.25 inches, and fluted.
Sights are in the scout position, and the rifle is dovetailed for scope
bases. Chamberings are basic with
no magnum chamberings.
The Kodiak
itself is a luxury version of the Bear Series, and designed for magnum
ammunition. The stock, made from
gray laminated hardwood, is reinforced with two crossbolts.
The barrel is exceptional; it has a bull profile, and a true float
instead of the special bedding of the other members of the Bear Series. Sights
are in the scout position, and the receiver is dovetailed for a scope mount.
Metalwork is stainless steel, with the barrel being 21.25 and
cold-hammer forged.

Classic
The Classic is sort of the
base rifle of the Model 85 Series.
The Classic is distinguished by its straight stock with a Bavarian cheek
swell, rosewood fore-end and pistol grip wrist caps, and oil finish.
The fore-end conceals an extended recoil lug.
The butt has a recoil pad.
Ample checkering is found on the pistol grip wrist and fore-end. There are no
iron sights, but there is an integral tapered sight mount above the receiver.
The barrels are for the most part unremarkable except for their being
floating barrels. Barrels are 22.44 inches for standard calibers and 24.375
inches for magnum chamberings.
The Deluxe is
basically a Classic with high grade walnut for the stock; design-wise, it is
otherwise very much like the Classic.
The fore-end cap, pistol grip wrist cap, and some other details are of
rosewood (in some cases inlaid).
Everything is hand-rubbed oil-finished, and the butt has a red rubber recoil
pad; a high-glass lacquer stock finish is optional.
External metalwork is blued and highly polished.
One departure from most of the Model 85 line is the fixed, internal
magazine with a hinged floorplate below; this allows engraving and decoration of
the floorplate, as well as providing a feature often preferred by European
hunters. Chamberings are only in selected medium-length action cartridges, and
the barrel is 22.44 inches. The barrel is tapered and floating.
The Classic
Deluxe melds, as the name would suggest, the Classic and the Deluxe.
The wood grade is not as high, and the stock is made in a more normal
design. It is, however, highly oil
or lacquer-polished. The cheekpiece
is not a Bavarian cheekpiece, but a simpler cheek swell. The pistol grip wrist
and fore-end are finely (though mechanically) cut, with diamond checkering.
The butt has a red rubber recoil pad,
again common on Sako rifles that have a recoil pad. Iron sights, like much of
the series, are in the scout position.
The external metalwork is polished blue. Bolts are driven through the
stock on both sides of the magazine well to strengthen the design. The fore-end
and pistol grip wrist are capped in rosewood.
Barrel length is 22.44 inches, except on the .375 H&H Magnum version,
which has a 24.375-inch barrel. The barrels are stainless steel under the
bluing, match-quality, and finished with cold hammer forging. Note that 7.64mm
Brenneke is not considered an off the rack chambering for the Classic Deluxe;
it must be special ordered, and is therefore rarer than other Classic Deluxes.

Finnlight
The Finnlight is
designed to be light and compact, to serve as a light carry though still useful
hunting rifle in rough terrain.
Secondarily, the Finnlight is also an excellent rifle for youths and
smaller-statured hunters, such as teenagers and some women (and men). The
cartridges it fires are for the most part high-powered ones; nothing has been
skimped on in power with the possible exception of the use from a shorter
barrel. The stock is synthetic and
black, with gray grip panels called by Sako soft stock coatings.
The stock has a small soft cheek pad and a black rubber recoil pad.
Barrels are short 20.25 inches for short-action rounds, 22.44 inches for
medium-action rounds, and 24.375 inches for magnum chamberings.
Barrels are of heavy profile, but fluted; they are also specially-bedded
and of high-grade steel.

Hunter
Sako calls the
moniker Hunter a serious matter of understatement, as the Hunter has
features of precision target rifles/sniper rifles in addition to being a
superior hunters weapon. The bolt
action is improved to the point where its smooth operation is notable.
The stock is of high-grade walnut with fine checkering in the right
spots, and the butt has the ubiquitous red rubber recoil pad.
The forearm and pistol grip wrist are capped with rosewood, and a Sako
emblem is on the pistol grip wrist cap.
External metalwork is deep matte blued, though matte stainless is an
option. Iron sights are optional,
and when present are in the scout position.
The rifles otherwise have dovetail mounts for scopes.
Barrels are heavy, match-quality, floating, stainless steel, and are
hand-mounted and balanced. Magnum barrel length is 24.375 inches; other calibers
come in a choice 20 inches or 22.44 inches. The Hunter is among the lightest of
the Model 85s. Though the Hunter is
a better rifle than the Bavarian, it is only marginally better; the two models
are in fact quite similar.
The Hunter
Laminated Stainless is essentially the same rifle internally, but the stock is
of high-quality gray laminated wood and stainless steel metalwork.
It is basically a fancier version of the standard Hunter, and weights 0.1
kg than its hunter counterpart. It
is otherwise identical to the standard Hunter. The Stainless Hunter is
essentially identical to the standard Hunter, but has bright stainless steel
metalwork. A Hunter Lefthanded
version of the standard Hunter is otherwise the same as the Hunter except the
orientation.

Safari
The Safari is
considered a limited-edition rifle; while it is produced every year, different
chamberings are produced every year and only limited amounts of the Safari are
produced every year. They are made
with dense, Presentation-grade walnut stocks, a Bavarian cheekpiece, and a
recoil pad for the butt. Sights are in the scout position, and the front sight
has an ivory bead. The rifles come
from the factory with premium-grade scopes as well, installed using Sakos
Optilock mounts. The fore-end and
pistol grip wrist are hand-checkered to fine grain, and the pistol grip wrist
and fore-end have ebony caps.
Safari models are all chambered for high-caliber chamberings, the smallest being
.338 Winchester Magnum. Barrels are
24.375 inches, match-grade heavy, stainless steel (under their blued exterior),
and floated. The word deluxe only
begins to describe the Safari.

However, the pistol grip wrist is a bit deeper, and construction is
stainless and synthetic materials.
The cheek swell is not as high, but it is padded.
The stock is of black composite material with the metalwork being matte
stainless; the grip areas of the rifle are of textured rubber molded onto the
material of the stock. There are no
iron sights, but there are dovetails for a variety of scope mounts.
The Synthetic Stainless is designed to use a minimum of lubrication.
The butt has a recoil pad, though black in this case.
The barrel is of medium profile, match-balanced, and floating; lengths
are like most of the Model 85 series 24.375 inches for Magnums, and 20 or
22.44 inches for the other calibers.

Varmint
Notes: As with most
such rifles with the varmint moniker, the Model 85 Varmint is designed with
accuracy to shot small critters at a distance as well as being accurate enough
to be a fine target rifle. The
Varmint has a cheek swell as well as a recoil pad on its butt (black, instead of
red), as well as having a deep pistol grip wrist (derived from those used for
benchrest shooting) and fine checkering on the wrist and fore-end.
The fore-end also has an extra-wide, flattened beavertail at the point of
grip (below the checkering). Each
chambering has a choice of two barrel lengths 20 inches and 23.625 inches.
The barrel itself is a bull barrel, floating, and match-quality.
The rifle itself is solid and weighty.
The Varmint
Laminated Stainless is virtually identical in its basic design to the Varmint,
but the metalwork is matte stainless steel, and the stock is coated in tough
laminate for weatherproofing. The
Varmint Laminated Stainless is also a little heavier than the Varmint, but for
game purposes, their firing characteristics are the same.
The weight of a Varmint Laminated Stainless is 0.2 kilograms heavier than
its Varmint counterpart.
