Sportco 71S/87A
Notes: These are semiautomatic varmint hunting rifles of otherwise conventional design. It started production in about 1966 and was produced for at least 10 years. The 71S is of conventional construction, with a distinctive squared fore-end. Construction was kept simple, with most metal parts made of stamped steel and so-so quality of wood. The receiver is grooved for a scope mount. The Sportco 71S was uses as a training rifle for a short time by the British military as the L-29A1 and L-29A2, but these were quickly replaced by the Cadet model of the L-85.
The Sportco 87A, also known as the Sportomatic M-87A, is similar, but uses a tubular magazine instead of the detachable box of the 71S. It was abandoned in 1967.
