Notes: The TARA
appears to be based on a Pinzgauer design, but has a longer wheelbase than it’s
nearest comparable Pinzgauer counterpart and numerous other changes.
A tarpaulin may cover the rear area, and the cab is enclosed with a
heater. The windshield may be
folded forward to allow fire through the front of the vehicle.
The TARA is issued with a camouflage net and is insulated against radio
interference (jamming attempts degrade radios inside the vehicle one level less,
and it is also somewhat resistant to EMP).
There is a small winch in the front with a capacity of 1 ton, and some
vehicles are fitted with an air conditioner.
The TARA is powered by an IMR 2.5-liter diesel engine developing 78
horsepower (a copy of a Perkins engine). A prototype model, which did not reach
full or even LRIP production has a turbocharged diesel with 155 horsepower. A
later prototype was also produced, with an engine power of 120 horsepower. Towed
load for a trailer without brakes is 900 kilograms; if the trailer has brakes,
1.5 tons may be towed. The fording
ability is 70 centimeters. Cargo capacity on-roads is 1.2 tons.
Unfortunately, the ground clearance was only 24 centimeters, which failed
under the requirements of the Yugoslavian (and later the Slovenian and Croatian)
Army, and production was terminated in 1991 after 16 examples were built. Some
reports state that these examples were put into service in Croatia and Slovenia,
but it seems that most of them were sold off to civilians. Variants conceived of
the basic vehicle include a minibus, a pickup (with or without an enlarged cab),
a hard bodied van, and a shelter or container carrier.
