Remington 300 Ideal

Notes: This successor to the Peerless (below) was introduced in 2000. The Ideal is made with slender lines to reduce weight, and at first glance can be mistaken for a semiautomatic shotgun due to those slender lines. The barrels are joined close together to reduce height. The Ideal uses barrel block locking with a lug on either side of the barrel lock, and the safety/barrel selector are located on the fore-end rather on the neck as with other over-and-under shotguns. The stock and fore-end are of American walnut, and the metalwork is steel which is blued and polished to a high shine. The chambers are designed for 3-inch shells, but can also fire 2.75-inch shells. Above the barrel there is a ventilated sighting rib, with a front sight bead containing white plastic to aid in sighting. There is another such bead halfway along the sighting rib. The butt has a thick rubber recoil pad. The barrels are supplied with a set of interchangeable chokes (Improved Cylindrical, Modified, and Full).

Twilight 2000 Notes: This shotgun does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Remington 332

Notes: Introduced in 2002, this shotgun is a further-updated version of the Peerless and Ideal. The Model 332 is built to very fine tolerances made possible by modern manufacturing equipment and steel, as well as new production methods. The Model 332 has a modified box lock with barrel block lug locking. The barrels, made from chrome-moly steel, have the standard Remington interchangeable chokes of Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full. The stock and fore-end are of American walnut. The Model 332 has a single selective trigger, with the barrel selector doubling as a safety.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This shotgun does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Remington 336

Notes: This over-and-under shotgun is specifically designed for sporting events, though it is also useful for fowling. It is based on the Peerless; it was introduced in 1996, and built until 2000. The Skeet version has a ventilated sighting rib on top of the barrels, and comes with two interchangeable Skeet chokes. The Sporting version is virtually identical to the Skeet model, but has compensator vents cut in the barrel near the muzzle to reduce felt recoil. The Sporting model has interchangeable chokes of Cylindrical, Improved Cylindrical, Light Modified, and Modified. Both have stocks and fore-ends of American Walnut; the breeches and barrels are of steel, with a silver coloring to the breeches and matte black finishes for the barrels. The stocks have thick rubber recoil pads.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This is an extremely rare shotgun in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Remington Peerless

Notes: This over-and-under shotgun appeared in 1993, and is one of Remington’s few such shotguns. It is based on the old Model 32, which dated from 1932. The Peerless comes in several barrel lengths, but only in one chambering. The top of the barrel has a ventilated sighting rib, and the barrels have interchangeable chokes of Improved Cylindrical, Modified, and Full. The stock is of American walnut with a layer of hard varnish, with a thick recoil pad on the butt. It has a single selective trigger, with the top barrel firing first, then the bottom barrel, unless selected otherwise. The barrel selector also doubles as a safety. This shotgun stopped production in 1999.

Ruger Gold Label

Notes: This side-by-side double-barreled shotgun was introduced in 2002. It was produced using the latest production methods, making what is normally an expensive type of weapon affordable (in real world terms, the Gold Label is far less expensive than comparable shotguns). The Gold Label uses lightweight cold-forged steel barrels with 3-inch chambers. The Gold Label has interchangeable chokes of Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and two Skeet/Sporting chokes. The Gold Label uses a single selective trigger; the standard sequence is right barrel first, then the left barrel, but this sequence may be reversed with a switch. The Gold Label has automatic shell ejection; these ejectors are particularly powerful and throw the spent shell a long ways. They will not eject a non-fired shell, but instead only move the cartridge slightly out of the chamber so it may be easily pulled out. The breech block is made from stainless steel, and not decorated; the stock is of walnut and may be a straight English-style stock or one with a pistol grip wrist.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This shotgun does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Ruger Red Label

Notes: This over-and-under shotgun was introduced in 1977 as a 20 gauge shotgun with 3-inch chambers, fixed chokes, and blued steel metalwork. There were three models of the Red Label at this time: the RL-2008 with a 28-inch barrel and Full or Modified choke; the RL-2018 with a 28-inch barrel and Improved Cylinder or Modified choke; and the RL-2026, with a 26-inch barrel and Skeet choke. (The RL-2008 and RL-2018 are identical for game purposes.) The Red Label has an automatic safety which operates when the gun is breached, as well as a manual safety switch/barrel selector. The Red Label has a single trigger. Some of these guns have highly engraved and decorated side plates. Above the barrel is a ventilated sighting rib.

In 1982, a 12 gauge version was introduced, with the same models being available. In 1985, a stainless steel version was offered. After 1989, the breech blocks of all models was changed to stainless steel (and a "K" put before the model designations of all versions), and interchangeable chokes (Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and two Skeet/Sporting) were also made standard on all models. All models up to this point had pistol grip wrist-type walnut stocks, but in 1992, the Red Label also came in a model with a straight English-style stock. (These versions have an "S" in their designation.)

In 1995, Ruger introduced back-boring to the Red Label line; these are slightly enlarged (by a fraction of an inch) over the size of the chamber, something which reduces barrel wear, imparts greater velocity to the shot pellets, slightly reduces the pattern, and slightly reduces recoil. (I have not yet figured out how to simulate this in game terms, so for now, these guns are identical to the older models for game purposes.) In 1997, three all-weather variants of the 12 gauge Red Label guns were introduced, variants with Zytel stocks and all-stainless-steel metalwork; these versions have a "P" in their designation and all have pistol-grip-wrist stocks.

Some time later (exactly when, I don’t know), 28 gauge Red Label guns were added to the line.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The all-weather variants do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline, nor do the 28 gauge versions. In addition, very few of these guns are back-bored.

Ruger Woodside

Notes: This is an over-and-under double-barreled shotgun introduced in 1995. The "Woodside" moniker comes from the select walnut stock, part of which covers the sides of the breech, flowing perfectly into side panels. The barrels are of cold-forged chrome-molybdenum steel, joined together into a monobloc. These barrels are capable of handling very high temperatures and pressures, making the Woodside capable of handling many different loads and types of shot and slugs, including steel and even titanium shot. The top of the barrel has a ventilated sighting rib, and a set of interchangeable chokes are included. The barrels are back-bored. Locking is done by lugs on the sides of the bottom barrel. The ‘unbreakable" firing pins of the Woodside are patented, and the trigger is a single selective one, with a sliding safety/barrel selector on the neck of the stock. The breech, trigger, and the edge of the fore-end are of stainless steel; the exposed stainless steel of the breech is engraved. The standard stock is a straight English type (designated by "KWSS" in the nomenclature), but stocks with pistol grip wrists are also available (designated by "KWS"). Ruger had plans to make a 20-gauge version of the Woodside, but these plans were dropped in 1996 before such guns were marketed.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This is a very rare weapon in the Twilight 2000 timeline.
