Ford Aerostar 1987-97

Notes: This was Ford's first entry into the minivan market, with initial models showing up in the early 1980s.  Early models were plagued by frequent mechanical failures and recalls, until the 1992 model year.  It is only an average performer in crashes, and only 1992 or later models have airbags, and even then only for the driver.  The 88-horsepower engine came only with manual transmission, but the two V-6s could have automatic or manual transmission after the 1990 model gear (before this, only manual transmission is available). Starting in the 1990 model year, the Aerostar has antilock rear-wheel brakes, and in 1994, only a five-speed automatic transmission is offered. Despite the long wheelbase, the ride is bumpy and noisy.  However, the long wheelbase makes the Aerostar roomy and two rows of seats are removable to increase cargo space; without removing seats, cargo space is limited.  The Aerostar has a trailer hitch and can tow up to 2.18 tons in its 155-horsepower variant or 1.47 tons in its 145-horsepower version; the 88-horsepower and 115-horsepower models are not equipped with a tow package. Servicing the Aerostar is difficult, as fluid reservoirs are difficult to reach and even oil checks suffer from bad dipstick positions.  The spare tire is difficult to reach and even the jack is hard to access.

Ford Aspire 1994-97

Notes: This car is adequate for general travel around town, but with poor acceleration and power and sluggish shifting, it is not a good car for high-speed or long-distance travel.  Passing with the air conditioning on is especially not recommended.  The engine is described as loud under normal circumstances and raucous when worked hard or the gas pedal is floored; it is a weak 63 horsepower 1-4.  Fuel economy, however, is excellent.  The transmissions may be automatic or manual, with the automatic transmission being 3-speed, and the manual 5-speed; automatic shifts tend to be a bit jerky, particularly when you floor it. Steering requires good arm strength unless the Aspire you are driving has power steering, a rare option. The ride is surprisingly good for such a small car. The rear passenger area is cramped and the front seats are considered uncomfortable; the rear seats fold for more cargo space.  All versions have dual front airbags, but antilock brakes were an option and not all Aspires have them.  Option package is basic.  The Aspire handles reasonably well.  Though this car was sold primarily in the US, Canada, and Mexico, the factory that produced it was actually located in South Korea, and the Aspire was designed by Mazda.

Ford Bronco 1987-96

Notes: The first Broncos were introduced in 1966, ancestors of the modern sport-utility vehicles.  The Bronco is a big vehicle that can be cumbersome to handle.  The Bronco's rear cabin fiberglass shell is prone to squeaks and rattles, as well as transmitting wind noises.  The 6-cylinder engine is adequate, but the two 8-cylinder engine options provide a large increase in power, at the expense of fuel economy.  Airbags are only on the driver's side (starting in the 1994 model year), but the strong body is good protection for passengers in a crash.  Suspension is switchable between 4x2 mode and 4x4 mode, but not on the fly; stopping the Bronco and shifting into Park is required before shifting between modes.  Rear wheel antilock brakes were standard until 1993, when four-wheel antilock brakes became standard. Transmissions were manual only until 1990, when an automatic transmission became standard. As the Bronco for this time period is tall (1.83 meters) and bulky, it is not terribly agile, especially in city traffic. The Bronco has a rear trailer hitch, able to tow 2.3 tons with the 6-cylinder engine, 2.39 tons with the 205 horsepower 8-cylinder engine, and 2.85 tons with the 210 horsepower 8-cylinder engine.

Ford Contour 1995-98

This is the standard version of the Contour.  Mercury has a similar sedan called the Mystique, and both the Mystique and Contour are based on the Europe-only Ford Mondeo. The wheelbase is as long as the Taurus despite being 20 centimeters shorter than that car. Dual front airbags are standard, but antilock brakes are only an option. Primary differences between it and the Sport version below are the suspension, options package, and some minor body styling.  In addition a 4-cylinder engine version is available, as well as a more powerful version of the 6-cylinder engine that is available in manual transmission only. The suspension is firm but not harsh. The front legroom is ample, but the rear seats are cramped (though this improved slightly with the 1996 model). The dashboard layout is good, except for the stereo, which has a lot of small buttons.

I owned a Contour Sport until in 2005 the transmission failed and I shafted it in favor of a Kia Sedona to support my large collection of dogs. The Sport Edition of the Contour has a better suspension, an outrageously-powerful (especially considering the light weight of the Contour Sport) V-6 260-horsepower engine, 5-speed transmission, cruise control, overdrive, and a variety of comfort accouterments, such as AM/FM radio, cassette player, bucket front seats that are fully adjustable, air conditioning and heating, and quad stereo speakers.  (I replaced my stereo with one that had an AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA player.) Safety equipment includes locking seat belts, front airbags for the driver and passenger, and antilock brakes.  Most have automatic transmission, but manual transmission is also available.  This vehicle was built in both the US and Mexico.

Ford Crown Victoria 1992-99

This is a large luxury-class car with a powerful V-8 engine.  Acceleration is good, but the vehicle has a tendency to not want to downshift easily when in 2nd or 3rd gear.  The Crown Victoria has good handling for a large car, with a smooth ride; unusually for a passenger car, the Crown Victoria is rear-wheel drive.  The vehicle is virtually soundproof to most normal road noises, including bumps, wind, and engine noise.  The trunk is described as cavernous.  Crash test results for the driver are 4 stars and 5 stars for the front seat passenger.  The Crown Victoria is equipped most of the high-end options, including antilock brakes (on later models), optional automatic transmission, AM/FM/cassette or CD players (depending on the model year), adjustable seats, cruise control, power equipment such as seats, windows, and locks, front airbags (on later models), and heating and air conditioning.  The Crown Victoria has a trailer tow hitch on its rear bumper, and is able to tow 2.4 tons.   Though this vehicle was primarily sold in the US, the factory where the Crown Victoria was made was actually located in Canada.

Ford makes several special versions of the Crown Victoria for law enforcement.

Ford Econoline/Club Van 1993-97

This forms the third leg in the basic tripod of American vans, along with the Chevy Van and the Dodge Ram Van.  Like those vehicles, there is a cargo version (the Econoline) and a passenger version (the Club).  Like the Dodge Ram Van, there are three lengths of this van; in the Econoline, they are called the E250, the E250 HD, and the E250 Super, while when in Club configuration, they are the XL, XLHD, and XL Super.  Like those vans, they can be fitted out as conversions with just about anything imaginable.  Though the Econoline and Club are more aerodynamic than its competitors, but they are also heavier, which tends to negate any advantages gained from body design.  Ride is good, but handling is cumbersome at best, or adequate with the optional handling package.  Towing is 1.71 tons with the 200 horsepower V-6, 1.98 tons with the 215 horsepower V-8, 2.29 tons with the 235 horsepower V-8, 2.39 tons with the 255 horsepower V-8, 2.8 tons with the 265 horsepower V-10, and 2.9 tons with the 215 horsepower Turbodiesel V-8.

Ford Escort 1991-96

Notes: This was Ford's standard compact car, built and sold in huge numbers in the US, and in somewhat smaller numbers in Europe, Central America, and South America.  The Escort of this time period is the result of a joint effort between Ford and Mazda; Mazda supplied the engines. It's 4-cylinder is somewhat underpowered, but adequate for a vehicle of its size, and contributes to its low fuel consumption.  It has an excellent ride, but is a rather noisy ride, transmitting much of the road, wind, and engine noise to the interior. Acceleration is slow with the base engine, taking up to 12.5 seconds to reach 100 kph from a standing start.  Engine vibration, especially at high speed, is also rather high. There are several versions available, from the standard 4-door sedan to a hatchback to a GT sport version; GT sport versions added antilock brakes in 1994, and this is when all versions added front airbags.  This vehicle was built in both the US and Mexico.

Ford Escort/ZX2 1997-00

Notes: This version of the Escort has a somewhat more rounded body – it resembles a smaller version of the Contour -- and uses different engines.  As with earlier Escorts, Mazda contributed a lot to the design, along with Ford of Europe. The standard Escort came in a sedan and wagon version initially, uses the smaller engine, and has a well-tuned suspension. Visibility is generally good, except to the rear corners due to thick roof pillars.  Wind and road noise are high, but tolerable.  Front head and legroom is generous, but legroom in the rear seat can get a bit tight for adults.   Controls are easy to find and manipulate, and interior storage is good, ranging from pockets on the backs of the front seats, center console compartments and cup holders, to a glove box and door compartments.  Dual front airbags are standard, but antilock braking is an option.  In both versions, the rear seat folds for additional cargo space, but not totally flat. Despite the jump in horsepower, acceleration in the base engine remains laggardly. The automatic transmission of this Escort actually beats the manual transmission for downshifting. The ZX2 coupe version was introduced in 1998, which is lighter than the sedan and thus has slightly livelier performance, though at a cost to ride due to its sport-tuned suspension. The ZX2 also suffers from more road and wind noise.

Ford Expedition 1997-00

This is basically a larger, more luxurious version of the Explorer.  On the road, it does not seem like such a huge vehicle, as it is easy to drive and has excellent all-around visibility due to its body design.  It is based on the F-150 chassis of the 1997 model year.  It's not agile, but it is less cumbersome than one might think from the size and weight of the Expedition, though body lean can get severe at high speeds.  These vehicles come only in automatic transmission versions, and both available engines drink liberal amounts of fuel.  Suspensions may be 2 wheel-drive or 4-wheel drive, and the suspension is noticeably softer in 2WD models. There are versions ranging from the basic (but still appointed) version up to the extremely luxurious Eddie Bauer version.  The interior is cavernous.  The front and middle seats have ample room, even for large or tall adults, but the removable third seat is best suited for pre-teens.  The cargo area is rather small, unless the third seat is removed.  The step up can be rather high, but optional retractable running boards are available.  The Expedition of this time period has a defect in that the vents at the feet may blow out cold air even when they are on heater. Towing capacity is 2.6 tons with the 215 horsepower V-8, 2.33 tons with the 220 horsepower V-8, 2.54 tons with the 240 horsepower V-8, and 2.99 tons with the 260 horsepower V-8.

*If the Expedition has the optional front bench seat, Crew rating is 1+9.

**For 2WD models, reduce off-road speeds by 25%, but reduce price by $125.

Ford Explorer 1991-99

This SUV is somewhat smaller than the Bronco.  It also has better handling, a more luxurious option package, has a little better acceleration, and better gas mileage.  Headroom and legroom are good all-around. The front passenger seat as well as the rear seats fold forwards to allow for outsized cargoes. The rear cargo area is largely flat. Controls are simple and well laid out. Steering is crisper, especially so in the long wheelbase 4-door version.  Six-cylinder engines do not necessarily accelerate with alacrity, especially when flooring it. Only an automatic transmission is available, but shifting is smooth and even. The vehicle has dual front airbags and antilock brakes on all wheels. However, all the luxury options usually present on the Explorer make it a rather RL expensive vehicle next to the Bronco.  The vehicle has a tow package, and can tow 2 tons (160 horsepower V-6), 2.2 tons (205 horsepower V-6) or 2.6 tons (215 horsepower V-8).

Ford F-150/F-250 1990-96

These are the standard pickup trucks of the Ford line.  The F-150 is the base vehicle, half-ton truck; the F-250 is the higher-capacity version of the F-150.  Both come in standard cab and extended cab versions.  The F-250 is a little over 41 cm longer than the F-150.  All versions of this truck have a V-6-powered version, three sizes of V-8-powered versions, and a V-8 diesel-powered version.  These trucks can get a little blown around in high winds, but otherwise handle very well, even with their cargo beds empty.  Steering can be a bit loose, and requires more care while driving. Super Cab rear seats are a little cramped for adults.  The F-150/250 are surprisingly well-appointed in most versions, and luxury versions are available. The automatic transmission available for the F-150 and F-250 of this time period is horrid, with sluggish gear changes and poor downshifting. Towing capacity ranges from 860 kg (I-6), to 895 kg (205 hp V-8), to 1.06 tons (210 hp V-8), to 1.34 tons (250 hp V-8), to 1.39 tons (V-8 Diesel).  That is a little low for a vehicle of its type, and its cargo capacity is also a bit disappointing.  This vehicle was built in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and distributed throughout North, Central, and South America.

Ford F-150 1997-00

Notes: This is the updated version of the F-150.  (The F-250 was discontinued, but a long bed version is still available.)  The low-power V-6 engine was replaced by a more powerful version, the diesel engine was discontinued, and the three gasoline-powered V-8s were replaced by two more powerful ones.  The V-6 is noisy when it idles, and acceleration is poor except in standard cab versions with little cargo carried. Towing and cargo capacity are again poor compared to their Dodge and GM counterparts. V-8s have better power response, and passing acceleration with the V-8 engines are mostly ample. They are, however, a little short on power in the 40-65 kph range, but much better above or below these speed ranges. The ride has improved to car-like qualities on the road, and good bump absorption off road; the tendency for the truck to fishtail in hard maneuvers when the bed is empty has been mostly eliminated.  Depending on the options chosen, the interior can be anywhere from utterly stark to quite luxurious.  All have a well laid-out dashboard with easy to reach controls, cupholders, and stash pockets and bins in easy reach. 4WD models have a noticeably higher step up than 2WD models, but both do have a rather high step up.  Optional retractable or non-retractable running boards are available. The front seats of the cab offer ample room, but rear seats in the Super Cab can be cramped.  Getting into these seats is easier than earlier F-150s, however, due to a passenger-side third door; starting in the 1998 model year, both sides have this rear door.  Towing capacity is 860 kg with the V-6, 980 kg with the 220 horsepower V-8, and 1.17 tons with the 260 horsepower V-8.

Ford Festiva 1988-93

Notes: This predecessor of the Aspire has an unusual production history, being a Mazda design produced in South Korea by Kia and marketed in most of the world by Ford.  The Festiva is a tiny car, nearly 18 centimeters shorter than even the Geo Metro.  Its small engine is very low-powered, but this is not the big problem it might otherwise be due to the Festiva's low weight.  Performance is, however, dismal. Handling is generally good except for the amount of body lean in turns.  Steering is unexpectedly heavy, and power steering was only offered from 1990 to 1991. The Festiva was never offered with automatic transmission. The 63-horsepower engine uses fuel injection instead of carburation, and it improves acceleration somewhat. However, both engines get disturbingly loud at high speed, and body lean gets heavy at high speed. Tires squeal loudly in sharp turns. There is a barebones L model, and the "luxury" GL model, in which you get extras like air conditioning and rear window wipers.  The front seat has good room, but the back seat is best suited for short people, even though it is larger than one might expect for such a small car.

Ford LTD Crown Victoria 1988-91

Notes: This predecessor of the Crown Victoria is a very large car, only slightly smaller than the Crown Victoria that replaced it.  It is basically a cheaper, less-well-appointed version of Lincoln Town Car of the same time period.  The 150-horsepower V-8 engine is big and powerful, but not especially fuel-efficient, and not really enough to move the weight of the LTD Crown Victoria with any real authority.  The vehicle can be unresponsive in handling, even with the standard power steering, but the ride is very soft, if a bit bouncy over bumps.  The automatic transmission has overdrive, which lends to better fuel efficiency than might otherwise be the case. The brake pad material tends towards rapid wear. Antilock brakes were optional starting on the 1991 model, and a driver-side airbag was standard starting in 1990.

Ford Mustang 1987-93

Notes: This is the high-performance sports car member of the Ford family.  It features a powerful 8-cylinder engine in a small, light car, with appropriate acceleration and speed, and correspondingly poor fuel economy.  The suspension is rather stiff, meaning that the car will bounce a lot on poor roads, but this also gives the Mustang excellent handling in high-speed turns and other such maneuvers.  Legroom is good up front, but the rear seat room is tight.  There is a hatchback version that offers decent cargo volume, but trunk space is small in the standard version, and virtually nonexistent in the convertible.  The powerful engine is rather noisy; the 4-cylinder engines are also noisy, and have a spotty repair record and give sickly performance.  Wet weather performance is a bit lacking, but changing the tires out for better ones than the stock tires yields good results. The accessory package is average to excellent, depending on options chosen; the convertibles are particularly well-appointed, which contributes to their high RL price.  The airbag in the car only protects the driver. The Cobra version debuted in 1993, with its powerful 245-horsepower engine and high luxury package.

Ford Mustang 1994-00

Notes: This is an improved Mustang first available in late 1993.  The engines are smoother running, and the anemic 4-cylinder engines have been eliminated.  The transmission is also smoother, and there is more safety equipment, including dual front airbags and antilock brakes.  The vehicle is also slightly larger than the 1990-93 models, with a little more trunk space and more legroom in the rear seat, but a hatchback version of this Mustang was not made.  There was, however, a version called the Cobra with an even more powerful 305-horsepower engine (or a 240-horsepower engine in mid-1990s Cobras) and high luxury package.  Ride quality is better, with convertibles, in particular, have a much-improved ride. The V-6’s acceleration is reasonable, though downshifts can be delayed slightly, especially when going uphill. Wet weather performance is again a problem with the stock tires.

Ford Probe 1993-97

Notes: Originally designed to replace the Mustang, the Mustang's popularity ensured that this would not happen. The Probe became the lower cost counterpart to the Mustang, with the cheaper but less powerful V-6 engine. A driver's airbag was standard, but a passenger airbag was not standard until the 1994 model, and antilock brakes were only options on all model years. The interior controls were not well designed and can be hard to use while the car is in motion and the driver is not able to put full attention on them.  The Probe is very agile, possibly more so than the Mustang, though it does not have the raw power of that car.  The rear seats were described as not having been designed for adults.  The suspension is quite stiff and the vibration contributes to driver fatigue over long drives.  Four-wheel brakes are standard on the GT, and front-wheel brakes on the base; antilock brakes are optional. The 4-cylinder engine lags in acceleration, and the automatic transmission version is slow to downshift on either engine. A driver’s side airbag is standard. There are a lot of options available, from basic to luxury.  The Probe is a hatchback, and has good cargo capacity.

Ford Puma 1994-97

Notes: Rarely seen in North America, the Puma was a Ford built and sold only in Europe except to those who have contacts in European markets.  Parts may be difficult to find for this car in North America, but should be more easily found in Europe.  It is a small sports coupe powered by a small engine for a sports car, yet coupled with the Puma’s light weight, this is not as big a handicap as it might otherwise be.  The handling can be described as amazing, more like that of sports cars tens of thousands of dollars higher in cost.  The parts are generally inexpensive and the Puma requires very little upkeep.  There are a large amount of bells and whistles for such an inexpensive car.

Ford Ranger 1993-97

Notes: This is the economy truck member of the Ford line.  Ford sought a more car-like look and feel for the Ranger, and succeeded.  As such, the Ranger is not as rugged as a truck like the F-150, and the engines are not as powerful, with an I-4 at the lower end, and 4-liter V-6 at the high end.   The Ranger handles better than most pickup trucks, and has a stable, car-like ride, absorbing most bumps very well.  The options package is likewise car-like.  Controls for things like stereos and suchlike tend to be a bit small, and the climate controls can be hard to get to while driving.  The steering wheel sticks a little too far out, and big people may have trouble fitting behind the wheel.  Towing capacity is 840 kg for the 112-horsepower I-4, 1.06 tons for the 147 horsepower V-6, and 1.37 tons for the 160 horsepower V-6.

Ford Taurus 1990-95

Notes: This is the basic mid-sized member of the Ford family.  It comes in both a 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder powered version; the 4-cylinder version is weak and underpowered, while the 6-cylinder version is responsive and quick, but has somewhat less fuel economy.  The Taurus' interior is roomy and there is a lot of trunk space.  There are driver-side airbags, but passenger side airbags were not introduced on the Taurus until the 1994 model.  Antilock brakes are standard, and the Taurus has a 5-star crash rating.  Options range from basic to abundant.  The Taurus is popular and common throughout North, Central, and South America.  There is a sedan and a wagon version.  A tow package is available as an option; this is much more common on the wagon version than the sedan version.  With the tow package, the Taurus can tow 1.25 tons with the I-4 engine, 1.47 tons with the 3-liter 140 horsepower V-6, 1.63 tons with the 3.2-liter and 3.8-liter V-6s, and 1.57 tons with the 3-liter 220 horsepower V-6.

Ford Taurus 1996-99

Notes: The main differences between this Taurus and earlier versions are mainly cosmetic, though the V-6 equipped version has a less powerful, but more fuel-efficient engine, and there is also a V-8 equipped version.  The 4-cylinder engine was discontinued beginning in the 1996 model year.  Like the 1990-95 versions, this Taurus comes in both sedan and wagon models; they are larger than their earlier counterparts. Dual front airbags are standard; antilock brakes drop to optional features. This Taurus is quieter with more soundproofing. The base engine lacks low-power torque and therefore does not accelerate quickly until the engine revs higher. The automatic transmission mostly shifts smoothly, but it does pause before downshifting. The base engine is noisy, rough, and slow, and the transmission paired with it is balky. Also like the 1990-95 versions, a tow package is available, and more common on the wagons.  The Taurus can tow 1.51 tons with the 145 horsepower V-6, 1.62 tons with the 200 horsepower V-6, and 1.75 tons with the 235 horsepower V-8.

Ford Tempo 1987-94

Notes: This vehicle was designed to replace the Contour of the same time period, but its anemic and noisy engines, cramped interior and trunk space, non-adjustable front seats, and poorly located controls made sure this did not happen.  Most Tempos were built with an automatic transmission, but the transmission used offers poor torque and poor acceleration. The 135-horsepower V-6 engine was a little-available option, and the two other engines are weak, even given the low weight of the Tempo. The Tempo did not sell well, and its only saving point appears to have been its low price.  The Tempo was discontinued after the 1994 model year.  The Tempo was produced in two and four-door versions.  The Tempo was built in both the US and Canada.

Ford Thunderbird 1989-97

Notes: This is sort of a cross between a sports car and a luxury car, combining power and handling with an excellent option package.  The base model has a standard 6-cylinder engine, but most customers opted for an 8-cylinder or supercharged 6-cylinder engine.  Interiors are sumptuous, usually with leather seats, though cloth is also available, power accouterments, AM/FM/cassette players (CD on 1995 or later models), quad stereo (Dolby on 1996 and 97 models), power steering and brakes, dual airbags on 1994 and later models (models before this had no airbags at all), antilock brakes on all models, and of course heating and air conditioning.  Unfortunately, Thunderbirds suffer from poor traction on wet or otherwise slippery pavement; this can be partially alleviated by better tires, but the problem is also with the vehicle's suspension.  The handling on the base model is sluggish, but the 8-cylinder and supercharged V-6 versions have a special handling package that greatly enhances this trait. Acceleration on the base model is poor, but the 200 horsepower V-8 and supercharged V-6 have considerable torque and acceleration and passing are snappy with those engines.

Ford Windstar 1995-98

Notes: Originally meant to replace the Aerostar in production, the Aerostar proved to be still very popular and the Windstar instead morphed into the luxury-car equivalent of a minivan.  The options package on a Windstar can include any of the various Ford luxury items, and even such items as a video/DVD/CD player for the rear passenger compartment (including stereo headphones for each passenger, individual climate controls, captain's chairs for the driver and front passenger seats as well as the first row of passenger seats in the rear, a small cooler powered by the car's electrical system, and other such items.  Two engines are produced, but both are somewhat underpowered for a vehicle of the Windstar's size, and gas mileage is not the best either.  The ride is smooth and the handling good, but the steering is a bit imprecise. The stereo controls are easy to reach from the driver's seat, but the small controls are difficult to manipulate when driving.  The Windstar was manufactured in Canada, and sold fairly well in Canada, the US, and Mexico.  Towing capacity is 1.59 tons with the 150-horsepower engine, and 1.85 tons with the 200-horsepower engine.

Ford Vuong SVT Raptor SuperCrew

Notes: Patrick Vuong customized his Ford Raptor SVT SuperCrew (a model of the 2012 F-150), making it into a tactical truck.  Wheels are Method Race Wheels rimmed with Standard Black Matte Black 301, and molded to the BFGoodrich 35-inch All Terrain T/A KO.  The Front Bumper has a bright light bar below the grille, and the grille is an Addictive Desert Design Stealth, has a winch that pulls through the front, with 10.5 tons pulling capacity and 3.06 kg meters of synthetic rope; Homeland Security also used the light bar.  The grille is extra-large to allow for more air intaking.  The driver has a Central Tire Regulation System.  All of this together allows the tools carried to be used by the engine, including power tools, battery chargers, and air compressors, when the engine is on.  The engine is designed for Baja Racing; the design also keeps most dust and dirt out of the powerpack.

The Ford has a full suite of electronics, including GPS, with an error of 5 meters radius.  Other devices include the central area map and weather radar (fed by NOAA), as well as standard civilian and military radios (these are accessed through a compartment in the rear area) -- there is even a front-seat massager that has seven settings!

Under the bed is a hidden compartment with room for valuables and a small battery of small arms -- the photo included a short-barreled M-16-type, an AUG, a P-90. an M-1014, an M-14 EBR, and a Remington 1100.  Also contained within these drawers is a set of small arms tools and basic tools.  Smaller tools are storable through compartments cut into the floor; these may carry a plethora of other material. The entire bed setup is available as a kit called the TruckVault Standard Two-Drawer Vault and an Extang Encore. Recesses beside the drawer's can hold full-sized ladders on each side. Inside the cabin, stash spots are in large numbers, The vehicle has a modicum of armor, though it is not that heavy.

Mr Vuong has chosen a 4x4 2012 Model base chassis for his vehicle, along with a 5.0-liter 385 horsepower engine. The transmission is electrically/computer controlled, except when it is towing more than half its capacity, when it switches over to manual transmission. (Towing capacity of this vehicle is 3.77 tons.) This chassis starts out at some 318 kilograms less than the base chassis of the previous model year, allowing for expansion of equipment and capabilities without unduly stressing out the suspension.  However, the suspension has been strengthened to guard against on the off case of overloading or rough terrain.  Mr Vuong's truck has an expanded cab -- essentially, it has rear seats and near-standard-sized doors to the rear (called a SuperCab by Ford).

Mr Vuong's truck is essentially a Ford SVT Raptor SuperCrew on steroids.
