Ed Brown Bushveld

Notes: Built around Ed Brown’s patented M-702 action and with most of the design features common to most Ed Brown rifles (see the Savanna below), the Bushveld is designed for hunting large, dangerous game, and thus fires powerful cartridges.  The Bushveld uses a non-slip finish to keep it from sliding in the user’s hands, and has synthetic furniture with a Monte Carlo-style stock.  Despite the power of its cartridges, the Bushveld has no muzzle brake, unlike most other Ed Brown magnum designs, but does still have the 1-inch thick Pachmayr recoil pad.  The Bushveld is drilled and tapped for a scope mount, and also has stalking-style sights.  Blued and stainless steel models are available for the .375 H&H Magnum model only; other calibers come only with blued metalwork.

Like other similar Ed Brown rifles, later examples are based upon the Model 704 action, but for most game purposes are identical to the earlier models.  However, newer Bushvelds can be chambered for a very wide variety of cartridges.  The newer Bushvelds still use the same McMillan synthetic Monte Carlo stock, colored black with metalwork finished in an Ed Brown proprietary finish called “Gen III.”  The color of this finish is also matte black.  Barrels are uniformly 24 inches and made by Shilen; they are hand-lapped, match-quality, and free-floating with a deep target crown.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This rifle does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Ed Brown Compact Varmint

Notes: As the name would indicate, the Compact Varmint is designed primarily for hunting small game, and fires primarily small-caliber, short-action cartridges (though some are large enough in caliber to take down game as large as deer).  It is also built around the basic Model 704 action, but only the 5.56mm version uses the push-feed feature; the rest used a controlled feed design, which also increases reliability.  The stock is a standard-contour McMillan fiberglass stock within a carbon-graphite shell, but built to an Ed Brown design that provides an almost straight-line profile, and has a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad on the butt.  The fore-end is wide and rounded on the bottom, but narrow on top (both to save weight and to provide finger grasps).  The hand-lapped Shilen 22-inch barrel is extra-heavy, match-quality, and free-floating, with a target crown.  No iron sights are provided, but bases are provided which can accept nearly any sort of sight mount.  Stocks are usually matte black, with a matte black Gen III finish to the external metalwork.  The trigger is a Jewell trigger which is adjustable for weight of pull.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The Compact Varmint is not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Ed Brown Damara

Notes: Though this rifle may look boring and unoriginal, Ed Brown has designed and tweaked the rifle to produce excellent results.  It is a fairly light rifle due to its McMillan graphite/composite stock and relatively short barrel; however, strength has not been sacrificed, due to the advanced materials and construction methods used.  The bolt has spiral cuts in it to reduce weight and hold lubrication.  The extractor is based on that of the M-16 (which I view with a skeptical eye due to my experiences with M-16 extraction failures, but apparently works extremely well on the Damara).  Trigger pull is very light and crisp, and a Jewell trigger group is used.  The barrels are stainless Shilen barrels.  The buttstock uses a 1-inch thick Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad.

Like most of Ed Brown’s bolt-action rifles, the Damara has for the past year or so been built on the new Model 704 action.  This essentially means little for game purposes, except for a larger mix of chamberings.  Barrels are 23 inches for the new Damara Standard, and 24 inches for the new Damara Magnum.  Standard versions have no muzzle brake, while Magnum versions do.

Ed Brown Express

Notes: Designed specifically for dangerous game hunting, the Express was developed during two years of using the prototypes on actual dangerous game hunts.  The Express is built around the M-704 action, and is fed from an enlarged magazine, allowing four rounds even with large magnum rounds.  The long action uses a controlled feed design incorporating a larger then normal extractor into the bolt itself, and the action increases the reliability of feed as well as extraction greatly.  The base McMillan stock actually had to be redesigned to accommodate both the large magazine and the huge, advanced bolt design.  The stock, made from fiberglass within a carbon-graphite shell, has a Monte Carlo design with a very thick recoil pad on the butt.  Bases which will accommodate most civilian scopes are provided, as well as stalking-type iron sights.  The stainless steel Shilen barrel is normally 24 inches long (25 inches for the UltraMag chamberings), and is heavy, match-quality, hand-lapped, and floating.  The stock is almost always matte black in color, and the exterior metalwork is finished in an Ed Brown proprietary finish called “Gen III”, which provides superior rust and corrosion protection.  On the Express, this finish is also matte black in color.  No muzzle brake is provided (except on the UltraMag chamberings), but the design does mitigate recoil to a decent extent.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The Express does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Ed Brown Savanna

Notes: This is Ed Brown’s most popular custom rifle, and like most Ed Brown rifles, is built around the patented M-702 action.  Most Ed Brown rifles are hybrids with proven features taken from other rifles, and then improved, and the Savanna is no exception.  The parts are largely forged, heat-treated, and hand-fitted; the barrels are match-quality.  The muzzle is target-crowned, and the extractor is of the M-16 type.  The stock is a McMillan synthetic stock to reduce weight and make it weatherproof.  The trigger is a Shilen match trigger, and the bolt has spiral flutes on it to reduce weight, promote smooth action, and distribute lubrication oil.  The safety is three position, allowing the bolt and trigger to be completely locked, or be operated without the possibility of the weapon firing.  The Savanna has checkering on the fore-end and pistol grip wrist.  The butt has a 1-inch thick rubber recoil pad to soften kick.  The Savanna has a muzzle brake for all its calibers except for the .30-06, which has no muzzle brake.  Metalwork may be blued or stainless steel.  The Savanna is drilled and tapped for a scope mount, but has no iron sights.

Later Savannas are built around the new Model 704 action.  For game purposes, the rifles are essentially the same, but the mix of chamberings differ from the original rifle considerably.  They are also differentiated into Savanna Standard versions (which have no muzzle brakes) and Savanna Magnums (which do have muzzle brakes).  All of these use 24-inch barrels, except for the UltraMag chamberings, which have 25-inch barrels.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This rifle does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Harrington & Richardson Model 300

Notes: This is a Sako action put into an American-style stock, with a folding leaf rear sight.  It is otherwise a standard sporting rifle, and was manufactured from 1965-82.  Standard barrels were 22 inches; the rear sight was a Williams ramp-type with a folding leaf sight for long-range work.  The stock was of the typical “American style” (pistol grip wrist and a half-length fore-end), with a roll-over comb on the stock, rosewood caps for the fore-end and pistol grip wrist, and a hard rubber buttplate.

Variants of note include the Model 301, with an 18-inch barrel; this weapon does not have a .22-250 chambering.  It does, however, have a Monte Carlo-type stock, and a simple folding leaf rear sight was used instead of the ramp/leaf rear sight combination.

The Model 317 Ultra Wildcat is a short-action-only rifle; as the name indicates, it is strengthened to take ammunition experimentation. The Model 317 a Monte Carlo-type stock with checkering on the pistol grip wrist and fore-end.  There was also a deluxe version of the Model 317 (the Model 317P), with better woods and basket-weave checkering.  (It is identical to the standard Model 317 for game purposes.)

Harrington & Richardson Model 265 Reg’lar

Notes: This is a simple rimfire bolt-action design, with a pistol grip stock and otherwise plain features.  The base Model 265 was introduced in 1946 and was built until 1961.  Stocks were built of simple hardwoods with a half-length fore-end, and the metalwork was of average-quality steel.  The barrel was 22 inches, with an adjustable Lyman rear sight and a blade front sight.

There were a number of variants of note: The Model 250 Sporter had a 23-inch barrel and took 5-round magazines only.  The rear sight was a spring-leaf type.  The Model 251 was a minor variant of the Model 250, using the original Lyman rear sight.  These rifles were built from 1948-55.

The Model 365 Ace had no magazine, being breech-fed; it was otherwise the same as the Model 265.  It was built only from 1946-47.

The Model 450 was built from 1948-61 and was intended for target shooting.  Its barrel was a 26-inch match-quality barrel.  The stock had an extended slab-sided fore-end with a flattened underside, and sling swivels were added to the weapon.  The choice of iron sight types was large and was up to the buyer; it was also drilled and tapped for both a scope and competition optics.  The Model 451 Medalist was a variant of the standard Model 450 with a micro-adjustable Lyman No. 524F rear sight as standard along with a removable Lyman No. 77 optical competition sight.

The Model 465 Targeteer was another target pattern with a 25-inch match-quality barrel and 10-round magazine; the sights consisted of a peep rear sight and a bead front, along with an optical competition sight.  It was built for only a short time from 1946-47.  The Model 466 Targeteer Junior was the same, but had only a 20-inch barrel; the stock also had a shorter length of pull.  The Model 466 was built from 1948-51.

The Model 852 Fieldsman had a 24-inch barrel and a tubular magazine, and could fire .22 Short, .22 Long, or .22 Long Rifle.  The sights were of the spring-leaf and elevator type.  It was built for only a few short months from 1952-53.

The Model 865 Plainsman was the longest-lived of the series; it was built from 1949 to the buyout of Harrington & Richardson by New England Firearms in 1986.  It could be had with a 22 or 24-inch barrel and a variety of iron sights.  Drilling and tapping was optional.  A minor variant of the Model 865 was the Model 866; built only for a few short months in 1971, it had a full-length fore-end.  The Model 866 is the same as the Model 865 for game purposes.

Harrington & Richardson 5200

Notes: This is a plain, though sturdy and attractive, bolt-action rimfire rifle.  The bolt handle and trigger unit, made of simple steel stampings, were a bit flimsy, however.  Despite this, performance was surprisingly good.  The Model 5200 Match version had an astounding 28-inch heavyweight barrel, and the fore-end accepted a sling, biathlon harness, or palm rest.

Henry Mini Bolt

Notes: The Mini Bolt was introduced in 2001 and is one of about 12 Henry rimfire rifles.  It is one of only two Henry rifles which use synthetic furniture and stainless steel metalwork, including the barrel.  The furniture has molded-in checkering on the semi-pistol grip and fore-end, and the fore-end has a 10.2-centimeter hand swell that starts 5.1 centimeters ahead of the receiver.  This hand swell also has molded-in checkering.  The barrel is stainless steel and 16.25 inches long. The stock is uniformly matte black. The Mini Bolt is equipped with Williams Fire Sights, which are adjustable in the rear and use a three-dot system with international green spots.  However, the front sight is not protected, and several testers found that the blade-type front sight got shipped easily.  The bolt handle is spoon-shaped and easy to reciprocate. However, cocking the bolt requires a second action; a knob at the rear of the receiver must be pulled.  The hammer will often fall is the bolt is pushed forward on an empty chamber. There is no provision for loading the Mini Bolt from the bottom, meaning is must be loaded from the top, which means it is more difficult to load, especially when optics are mounted.

Hill Country Rifles

Notes: This is sort of a polyglot of an entry; this is because, for the most part, Hill Country Rifles does not make rifles from a start, but instead takes a good rifle and makes it excellent or assemble rifles from quality components.  Their rifles are bolt-action rifles with modifications designed to increase accuracy, increase flexibility in deployment, increase power, take a rifle with a wood stock and give it a synthetic stock (or vice versa), or make a rifle lighter and/or easier to handle (or any all of the above).  Though I will show a sample of their work here, their rifles are quite often made to individual specifications or as a small group to certain specifications.

The first rifle we will consider is the Accurized Winchester 70 Supergrade.  Produced for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge, the stock is of walnut and very finely finished, with high-gloss laminated wood and blued external metal with a high deep blue finish.  The fore-end has an ebony cap, and the Winchester 70 checkering is present. The finish is, if anything, absolutely top-notch. The pistol grip wrist cap is of polished natural metal steel, the bottom of the magazine and trigger pack are of a solid steel piece, and the rifle has cross bolts to help take up the felt recoil.  The butt has a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad. It’s 20-inch barrel has a match-quality tapered barrel (normal to light at the muzzle) to reduce weight and improve balance, and it is target crowned.  The barrel is glass bedded with aluminum pillars. Three scope mounts are drilled and tapped, though only two scope rings are included with the rifle; these rings are lapped to allow easier installs and the ability to use a variety of scopes.  The three mounts together allow the installation of a Weaver or MIL-STD-1913 rail, or a scope in the scout position.  The trigger is the equivalent of a match trigger, with a mere 3-pound pull weight.

The Custom Field Stalker is an assemblage of quality parts that make more than the sum of their parts.  The Custom Field Stalker is based around a Stiller Precision Predator action, with a one-piece fluted bolt and an M-16-type extractor.  The match grade Timney trigger is finely tuned and has a very light pull weight.  The 22-inch barrel is of heavy profile, of match-grade stainless steel, and is tipped with a target crown.  The entire rifle’s parts are hand-finished and accurized.  The stock is a McMillan Remington Sporter Stock, of black synthetic and fitted with a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad.  The trigger guard and floorplate are made from one piece.  Sling swivels are found on the stock and under the fore-end.  The pistol grip wrist and fore-end are textured for grip.

The Custom Long Range Tactical is sort of a big brother to the Custom Field Stalker, firing the powerful .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge.  It is built on a Stiller TAC-338 action designed for such high-power rifles, with a one-piece fluted bolt.  Below this is the match-quality Timney trigger with a very light touch.  The stainless steel barrel is 27 inches long, with a bull profile, and aluminum pillar and glass bedding.  This barrel is tipped with a Badger Ordnance Thruster Compensator muzzle brake, but the muzzle brake is removable and the threads will accept most aftermarket muzzle brakes or silencers.  The rifle uses a McMillan A5 synthetic stock with an adjustable cheekpiece and a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad.  The magazines used are AI magazines.  Finish is Sniper Gray Cerakote, while the stock is black with texturing on the pistol grip wrist and fore-end.

The Field Stalker is a magnum rifle designed for hunting medium to large animals.  The rifle is built around a CNC-machined Stiller Predator action with a one-piece fluted bolt, which then is further hand-fitted. The rifle has an M-16-type extractor and a Timney trigger pack with a very light pull weight set. The 24-inch stainless steel barrel is of heavy profile and is tipped with a target crown. The barrel is further specially-bedded with aluminum pillar and glass bedding.  The parts are put into an olive Precision Stock Works Rifleman stock with a Black Speckle finish, with the parts and barrel being again hand-fitted at this point.  A Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad is fitted to the butt.  External metal has been given a Graphite Black Cerakote finish.

The Harvester Series are based on Remington 700 BDL actions, fitted with new barrels, new stocks, and given an accurization that includes in some parts hand-fitting. The Harvester uses an aluminum pillar and glass bedding for the barrel, and mounted into a McMillan Mountain Rifle stock with an olive and black-speckled stock finish.  The stock has sling swivels under the stock and fore-end, with the pistol grip wrist and fore-end being textured for grip.  The trigger is a Remington X-Pro trigger, but tuned at the factory to a light touch and smooth operation.  Exterior metalwork is in Graphite Black Cerakote.

The Harvester in 5.56mm NATO has a 22-inch barrel with a stainless steel match-quality barrel and a target crown.  The rifle is fairly light and balances well.  The big brother of that rifle is the Harvester in .300 Winchester Magnum. It is of similar, if sized up as necessary for the larger cartridge.  The barrel is 24 inches long, of heavy profile, stainless steel and match quality, and tipped with an integral pepperpot flash suppressor.

The Harvester Plus is based on the Harvester, but tends to be larger and heavier than a base Harvester rifle.  Most details are the same or similar to their Harvester counterparts. The Plus comes in .25-06, which has 26-inch barrel and .280 Ackley Improved, which has a 24-inch barrel.

The version in 6.5mm Creedmoor has the addition of an adjustable cheekpiece, and the stock is a McMillan A3/A5.  This chambering also uses AI detachable magazines, and the trigger is a Jewell trigger set to 2.5 pounds of pull weight.  The barrel is 24 inches and fluted.  The version chambered for 7mm Remington Magnum is similar in many ways, including the use of a McMillan A3/A5 stock, with a floorplate instead of a magazine well and a grip point under the stock.  The trigger for this one is a Timney trigger set to 2.5 pounds.  The Harvester Plus in .300 Winchester Magnum is set in a McMillan Hunter stock, with the standard Pachmayr Decelerator pad and a swelled cheekpiece.  The 24-inch barrel is a factory barrel, but is hand-fitted, specially bedded, and tipped with a pepperpot-type muzzle brake.  It has a Mk X trigger set to 3 pounds.

There are three versions of the Harvester Plus in 7mm-08.  One has a McMillan Remington Sporter stock in Olive Drab.  The action is squared and hand-fitted.  The 22-inch barrel is a match grade Hart stainless steel heavy barrel tipped with a target crown. The second is virtually identical, but uses a PSW Rifleman stock with a cheek swell which is Olive Drab with black speckles.  Both are identical for game purposes. The third has a Coyote Tan stock with brown and black speckles and matte black Cerakote metalwork.  The 22-inch barrel is a bull barrel tipped with a target crown, and otherwise of the same quality as the other 7mm-08 rifles.  Actually, there is a fourth version, a left-handed version of the first 7mm-08 Harvester Plus.

The Harvester Plus Youth is also based on the squared and hand-fitted Remington 700 BDL action, made from stainless steel.  The rifle has a Jewell match trigger. The Youth otherwise has most of the features of the other Harvesters.  The stainless steel 22-inch medium contour barrel is match grade and has a target crown. It is specially bedded and hand-fitted. The stock is a Remington Mountain Rifle stock, appropriately shortened in LOP, with a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad.  The stock is tan with black specks on it, and the metalwork is flat Dark Earth Cerakote.

The Harvester Tactical is not meant to be a military rifle, though its police use is obvious.  Based, like most of the Harvesters, on the Remington 700 BDL action, the Tactical is fully accurized using hand-fitting and tuning.  The Tactical uses a PSW Rifleman stock with a cheek swell and a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad.  The stock has a finish called Granite in Tan with Black speckles.  The 20-inch barrel is a factory heavy contour barrel, free floating and tipped with threads for a silencer or muzzle brake or with a cap if using neither.  Under these threads is a recessed target crown.  The trigger is stock, but tuned and accurized with a pull weight of 3 pounds.  Metalwork is finished in Graphite Black Cerakote.  Two sling swivels are under the fore-end and one is under the stock.

The Long Range Tactical Lapua is kin to the Custom Long Range Tactical, but based on a Defiance Machine Rebel with a one-piece fluted bolt and a flared bolt knob.  The trigger pack is a Timney with a pull weight of 2.5 pounds.  The stock is a McMillan A3/5, with an adjustable cheekpiece, camouflaged, with a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad.  Below the cheekpiece on either side are quick-release sling points; another sling swivel is under the fore-end, one that can also be used as a bipod attachment point.  Above the receiver is a MIL-STD-1913 rail.  The 27-inch heavy barrel is of stainless steel, specially bedded, and tipped with a Badger Ordnance Thruster Compensator muzzle brake.  Magazines sold with the rifle are AI magazines.  The metalwork is finished in Flat Dark Earth Cerakote.
